THE LAST OF THE NEW GUINEA EXPEDITION. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 16 April 1872

THE LAST OF THE KEW GUINEA EXPEDITION. THE Sydney pspen publish a long report mada by Lieut. Gowlland to Sir James Martin respect- ing the late trip of the " Governor Blackall." We subjoin the most interesting portions of the document : In the first place, then, I would desire to allude to the foot-ns I have already done on a former occasion-that in this, as in the instance alluded to, the cause of disaster ia dearly traceable to (he culpable ignorance of navigation evinced by the master of the vessel. He took bis «bip to sea, as it appean by the testimony of the survivors, almost destitute of charla or proper ' appliances for navigating. Blown away by a gale of wind when almost within sight of New Guinea, bis vessel is allowed-to drift-I cannot say piloted-among the most dangerous reefs of the Coral Sea. Her position before striking tbe Bramble Beef appears to have been altogether ' unknown to her captain, or indeed to any of his j offices, although, in fact, both Palm and Hinchinb...

COPPER MINES. (To the Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald.) [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 16 April 1872

COPPER MIKES. (To the Editor of the Sydney Hominy Herald.) Sin,-In Tour to-day's ÍBsue appears a letter signed " Inquirer," asking for in- formation concerning tbe Moonta Copper Mining Company of South Australia, I suppose for the purpose of estimating what should be tho present selling value of the. Peak Downs shares, apart from the little game of bearing the market. I have much pleasure in supplying tbe information required, and I quite endorse your correspondent's opinion that the " Moonta " is the only Austra- lian copper mine which can at all com- pare with that on Peak Downs. From a report before me, dated 29th I September, 1S72,1 find that the Moonta Mining Company is divided into 32,000 sbares of £1 each ; tliat now, if not always, it only mines and sells ores to the Wallaroo Company ; that the sales amount to 20,000 tons per annum, averaging about 20 per cent ores ; that the price is £9 12s. per ton ; and that the working expenses amount to £6 Os 4d per ton-giving a profit ...

SOCIAL BRAVOES. (From the Civilian.) [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 16 April 1872

SOCIAL BRAVOES. (From tine Civilian.) NoTmsa would be more delightful than what is called the battle of life if the fighting one bad to do was all open and aboro board. If a man could always see bis foe, and exchange lusty blows in broad daylight, and in the presence of admiring onlookers, he might go joyfully into a battle, and get an appetite for lunch from a skirmish. Contention would be something like the ancient tournament, in which tho knight who bore himself gallantly always came off with honour. But, unfortunately, the world is very unlike the lists, where knights were wont to tilt with blunted lances, in the presence of fair dames, and with veteran warriors as umpires to see fair play. The rules of the game of social warfare are sufficiently familiar to most honourable men, but society has no power to expel any of its members who fail to observe them. Tbere are social braroes among UB who stab in tbo back, who dig pitfalls for their victim tbat he must of neceBBity fall int...

THE BEST RAILWAY TO PEAK DOWNS. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 16 April 1872

THE BEST BAIIiWAT TO PEAK DOWNS. TO TITS EDITOR OF THE BRISBANE GO UBIER. Sm,-AB one of the apathetic though interested inhabitants of St. Lawrence, past whose doors the Clermont or Peak Downs trade ia drifting, I was very glad to observe some articles in your columns, and in those of your Rockhampton con- temporary, respecting a railway to Peak Downs. _ j I heartily concur in your very impar- i liai and just critique on the letter of your correspondent " David Copperfield, Junr.," but must add that hie fault is the reverse of what you suppose-he does not put his caBe so strongly as it deserves, and errs on the moderate side in his figures. My own knowledge confirms the con elusion you draw from the Rockhampton Press-viz., that tbe Expedition Range Extension would not serve any district of importance until further extended ; a line hence to Clermont, however, direct, would tap a largo pastoral country to the north-west and west of Clermont, besides the districts named by your Rockha...

The Rockhampton Bulletin WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE GLADSTONE OBSERVER. FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 1872. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 18 April 1872

WITH wm cn ia IROOKFOBATIP TOB GLADSTONE OB SE EVE II. FRIDAY, APR1X 19, 1872. TBE subjoined paragraph, clipped from hut SatardaT'a/QaeenefanaVr gires a more favourable complexion to the recommendation of the Hovel Commission than bas vet been put upon it 0, as the paragraph implies, a narrow gauge railway ii to be carried through to Peak Downs, we think the proposal will be received with satis {action. "We (says our contemporary) were prepared to learn that the Railway Commission would recommend the immediate extension cf Hie Downs railway to Brisbans-the natural out- let of the line. Nothing short of that would satisfy that portion of the public who look upon the rail weysai investments which should bs made to pay if possible. But the recommendation of the Commission that the material of the Book, bampton and Westwood line should be used "( for Ûie purpose will sorprise many. It appears feasible, however ; and, backed a* it is with the further recommendation that a line be laid do...
