The Poultry Run. L\- : .THE POPULAR MINORCA.! . A writer in the 'Poultry World' gives some valuable tips on the qualities of Minorcas and the mat ing of them. As an egg-'producer, he says, the Minorca hen may well be termed the 'Queen' of all the non-sitting ^varieties. It certainly ' lave metre- ami larger eees than any other non-sitter. It is quite an easy matter for a pen of Minorcas to av erage 200 eggs per bird for the year. Then, again, the eggs We 'eggs' in the truest sense of the word, since they frequently go six to the pound. When treating on egg av erages, one should remember that there are good an3 bad strains of every breed. Care must, therefore, be tak'e'n to obtain birds or eggs from a good strain, which is the whole secret to successful eggpro duction. The -Minorca, naturally, cannot be included in the category of table breeds, but, notwithstand ing this, its flesh is very sweet and juicy, very much resembling that of a turkey. MEERSCHAUM. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 14 February 1911

MEERSCHAUM. Meerschaum is a compact, early mineral— hygrated magnesium sili cate. It is grayish white, or white with a faint yellowish tint. It occurs in stratified earthy or allu vial deposits on the plains of ~Eski- Shehr and elsewhere in Asia Minor ; also in Greece, at Hrubschitz, in Moravia, and in Morocco. The de posits in Asia Minor are worked by pits and galleries at a depth of twenty-four to thirty feet. The min eral, when brought to the surface,'is so soft as to be easily cut with a knife. It is carefully scraped to re move any adhering material, dried in the sun for about a week, then again scraped, and polished with wax.
