THE PROPOSED NEW MAIL ROUTE. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 31 October 1868

THE PROrOTSED }-EIV MAIL ROUTE. We recently adverted to a scheme mentioned by tie 'Albury Banner ' as being under the consideration of the Postmaster-Genera], -which proposes that the Sydney mail shall be convey ed three days a -week from Yass to Wagga Wagga, -via Binalong, Murramburrah, and Jnnee, passing onwards to Albury by Mangop lab, Cookendina, and Gerngery. As in advocating this proposal our contemporary pointed out that postal advantages would be afforded to districts now destitute of them, and that ' the mail service would be carried on efficiently without extra expense,' it is obvious that on the days sacred to Binalong, Murrumburrah, Gerogrey, &c, the postal service by our districts would be discontinued —that/in fact, the abovementioned townships would profit by our loss. In our former reference to this subject we showed that Binalong and Murrumburrah, being on the direct line between Yass and Young, enjoyed all the postal facilities accord ed to the latter impor...

TUMUT. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 31 October 1868

TVilVT. (from our correspondent^ October 29th. — I suspect it is no news to state that the weather in Tumut is extremely hot, but as it is a time honored custom when friend meets friend after the usual nod of civility to exchange ideas on the condition of the atmosphere I conform to the general practice. Whether this sudden heat, so ener vatinc to the human frame, has caused a corresponding depression in trade here I cannot say, but business certainly languishes, the past week being about the dullest on recrd. Newsmongers like myself might have expired from ennui had not some benevolent folks furnished all local gossips with a few sensa tional topics for conversation. We have been treated to two prize-fighta, or at least attempts thereat, one of which was conducted with all the formalities of the 'P. R.' and some 30 rounds were fought before tho police arrived and the combatants decamped. Again, on Monday last, our Court house contained a crowded audience who carried away with them ...

ADELONG. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 31 October 1868

ADELONQ. (FROM OtJB C0I1RK8PONDENT.) October 29td. — Since I lart wrote, the weather has been very hot during the day, and on high ground the grass is beginning to look quits brown. The Athletic sports held on Saturday last at Mr. Charles Shaw's Adelong Hotel passed off exceedingly well. AU were well contested and the spectators were more numerous than I have known on any former occasion. T. Eggleton, of Tumut, was the winner of the foot race, James Failon being a good second. The running high jump, was won by James Failon, who cleared 5 feet 3 inches. The hop, step, and jump was also won by James Failon. The throwing the hammer was won by Mr. Charles Shaw, whose first throw was never beaten by any of the other competitors, although desperate attempts were made to surpass it. The sack race was won by a little boy of ?Mr. Perkins's, who beat a large number of competitors. Numerous other sports followed whiclrwerc kept up till darkness put a stop to the fun, and a great number then re...
