"A LAME DUCK." "DIRTY TRICKS IN DIRTY WEATHER." [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 9 May 1914

"A LAME DUCK." '■DIRTY TRICKS IN DIRTY WEATHER." "I lmd been resting for some little J" time after a round trip, and funds were getting low,, so I set about lojking for another ship. Calling at the offices of a firm down at the docks they offered me a first mate's Lorth at' a rattling good salary. My fupcrs were clean, and I knsw 1 could get good money ; but this was exceptionally good, so I felt very happy over it. X was to join my. ship r.t Antwerp, and make the voy • ■ age to "India. Those were my orders, and acting on them I went straight over there ami went aboard. She Bccmed a trim sort of craft as car po boats run ; ra'nted up fresh. She certainly wasn't a new boat. Her nin.e was new to me, yet her lines teemed familiar. "Having seen to several things, I hadn't much time to think about tills.' Then He Saw Red. [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 9 May 1914

Then He' Saw Red. Editors-Why do you persist in com ing here? I tell you I want facts, not Action. * Authoress—Ob, I don't wish to sell any of my stories. I am writing a Bhort serial, entitled "The Ugliest Man On Earth," and I came In mere ly to obtain local'color. • The fare at a certain boarding house was very poor. A boarder who had been there for some time, be cause he. could not get away, was standing in the hall when the landlord rang the dinner-bell.' Whereupon an old dog that waB lying outBide on a rug commenced to howl mournfully. The boarder watched him a little while, and then said— "What on earth are you howling for? You don't have to eat it!" A girl |8 put into the world, like sugar into "tea, to sweeten it. Olve the devil his dye, but be care ful there's not much due to him. Nothing hurts a woman so much as when a man won't give her an op portunity to say "No." Popularity dtpends on how well you treat your friends, and how often.

LADIES' LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 9 May 1914

LADIES' LETTER. I never remember blouses that are calculated to go to the heart of every woman who appreciates an ologance achieved by simple methods and with out any apparent otfect than at the present moment. Thoy aro now Buch a very Important ltom of every kind of costume that the choice la as varied as the numerous distinctly dlfferont classes of designs, all worthy of se parate consideration. From the simple shirt to the com plexity of the afternoon or doml-toll lette blouse of tullo Is a far cry. Com mencing at the bottom of the ladder, so to say, with the simple shirto, these in themselves provide food for deep reflection. It is the American women who look their beBt in tho severest of tailor made shirts.- I do not mean the wo man whoso figure is at its best nor the pretty creature who can carry off all kinds of fashionable follies and modish madnesses, but the natural, homely American, who knows how to put on her colthes. The plain untrlmmed blouse Is most essential for morn...

Cycling and Motor Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 9 May 1914

Cycling and Motor Notes. fBy Our Spccial Correspondent,] A luily contributor to a London cycling paper makes a very novel suggestion in respect to mechanically aided machines. It seems that in some parts oC England sido-car attachments to ordinary cycles are not common, hut the propulsion of the combination machine calls for con siderable muscular exertion. To over come that disability* it is suggested that the auto-wheel attachment be em ployed to take up the drive of the side car wheel, and, in fact to propel the machine complete when i oad and wind conditions are fnvontolc. The idea is n particularly good one ; the auto-wheel is successfully used as an attachment to the simple cycle, and i;s adaption to the cycle side-car is merely an extension ol its usefulness. The writer referred to makes a good point or two of the sociability or companionship of cycling, which is lacking in motor cycling, even with a side-car, and remarks that slit has often caught fleeting glimpses of the fe...

FOOTBALL [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 9 May 1914

FOOTBALL — [By "Sport."] A scratch match was played on the local ground last Saturday between a mixed 3(5 consisting of railway and town men. The game was witnessad by a fair number of spectators, wha were there to see the "new blood." This match was very satisfact ory considering it was the first for the season. Some new play ers were tried, who no doubt will be of great assistance to the club this year. Joe Bryson cap tained the Railways and handled his men in excellent style. VV. Hindson captained the town team and also did likewise. The um pire (L. Costello) was not at ali partial to his railway mates. Be fore the ball was bounced the players had to make themselves useful in clearing the playing ground, which was covered wit) thistles. This, I think, might have been done- previously. After a very interesting game uj to half time the town ran awaj from their opponents, the final scores being 4 goals 3 behinds tc: 3 behinds.
