Green Manures for Poor Lands. Perhaps nothing in the whole province of farming engrosses so much the attention of those interested, as the question of preserving or increasing the fertility of the soil. There are several reasons for this, independentof the ever existing necessity for supplying farming land with properties taken from io by unjust cultivation.— They are, first, the great quantity of worn-out land, once fertile and productive, and made needful by the rapid growth of population, and the growing demand for the products of the farm ; and, second, the soil of inferior quality broughtinto cultivation from year to year, by reason of the same necessity. Land that has been worked to death, and left to lie as waste, must be restored to fertility, and that which has never been productive must be made so, in order to become profitable. It is not so difficult to make worn-out and barren land produce good crops, as one wo'd suppase from a hasty view of the innumerable failure...

The Dairy. The butter-aud cheese controversy, says the Tioga Agitator, grows more and more interesting and instructive. Since, our last issue-we have received reports from two dairies which eclipse all others reported, either in Tioga or Bradford counties. Mr. Jacob Borabaugh, of Delmar, sends us the following exhibit of receipts from his dairy of 21 cows, in 18C8 : Spring butter $350 00 Cheese -25.''0 Pall Butter 1I13.2.* Pork a""-11" Eight Calves, sold for IO'1.."0 Butter retailed f>:.,25 300. lbs. used .is family 13'.,0!l Calfskins i«,00 Five shoats raised : 50,00 Total $2151.01 Making an average to each cow of $102,38. Deduct the cost of butter used in the family—Sl3.',50—the average earnings per cow vjas $98,07. Beniembcr this is the exhibit of a dairy of 21 cows; and each cow earned S102,38: Blr. Lafayette Gray,of Sullivan, under date of March 8, writes us as follows : "Having for many years- been a reader of The Af/itator, and feeling a lively interest in the we...

How to Fit Collars to Houses' Shoulders.—It is very important to have a collar fit nicely and snugly to the shoulders ef the horse. It enables him to work with a great'deal more strength. It prevents galling =.nd wounding, as the friction is avoided. Collars are made,or should be so made, to throw the chief force on the lower part of the shoulder. The horse can apply but little strength on the upper part, and for ibis reason breast collars'are coming greatly into vogue —as the stren<nh is ezerted on the lower part of the shoulder. But we started out to tell our readers how to make a new collar fit the shoulder of a horse. The collar should be purchased of tho proper size ; just before putting it on the first time immerse it in water, letting it remain about a minute, and immediately put it on the horse, being careful to have the hames so adjusted at the top and bottom as to fit the shoulder, and then put the horse to work. The collar being wet, will adapt itself to the sh...

A horse that is in the harness every day needs an abundance of food and the right kind. Oats make more muscle than corn, and should always form part of the food of a hard working horse. Corn gives plumpness and imparts warmth. The.colder the weather the more corn; the harder the work the more oats. Food for Chickens.—A writer recommends for chickens, for the first week after hatching, hard-boiled eggs, to be given, chopped fine, at least twice a day ; wheat steeped in milk, and coarse Indian meal, bread crumbs, etc. A change of fcod is necessary twice a week, substituting cracked corn for wheat. A correspondent of the American Farmers' Magazine helped to build a corn crib, in Vermont, fifty-five years ago which is still in good order, and in which not a rat or mouse was ever known to be. It is on stone pillars, two feet high, each capped by a broad fiat stone, smooth on the underside. It is contended by some that following corn with cats or barley, and then with wheat, is not...
