ORIGIN OF GREENHORN . Term TJ »« mI l > y Ifnn « rr « Mirny Yf « r « Abo to Designate DfH -with AltliiK AiitH-rn . The democratic cloakroom of the senate held a congenial company , of whom Mr . Vest , of Missouri , was th © center . There were scintillations and pithy reminiscences , the- conversation eventually turning to former Senator Turpie , of Indiana . All agreed- that he was a man of erudition , and someone ventured that Mr . Turpie , now residing among his own people in the Hoosier state , is onjp of the best informed in belles lettres of any roan who ever came to the senate , says the Washington Post . I recall , interposed Senator Vest , an incident along that line , which demonstrates what a marvel Mr . Turpie is in his fund of information . I was once in a company where ! a question arose as to the origin of the term greenhorn . Thfc question went around until It reached Mr . Turpie . Oh , yes , observed Mr . Turpie , readily . It is a term that , was used ma...

HEIRS OF JOHN HANCOCK . [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 18 March 1903

HEIRS OF JOHN HANCOCK . D *« cend » tvt » of the American Patriot Pat In Claim * for French Spoliation Money . It looks as if the line of descent from John Hancock of revolutionary fame might have to be run clown for the purpose of determining at this late day who are his heirs-a-t-law , says the Boston Herald . Though the governor died about 1783 , and all his estate then apparent was administered upon by Dorothy Hancock , his widow , it has recently come to pass that his estate is entitled to something by virtue of a French spoliation claim , and in order to receive payment of it supplemental administration has to be taken out on his estate . A few months ago Mr . George A . King , an attorney , upon the request of Mrs . Elizabeth L . H . Wood , upon the supposition that she was the only heir at law of the patriot , filed a petition in the Probate court for Suffolk county ; asking , that he be appointed administrator of the unadmlnistered . estate . It now appears that MaryiS . Sa...

KAISER WILHELMS MUFF . i 0 Ik Cnlle . l tt Jnfrd , « nti r . Conrldercd EHKcntln . l l » j- fiorninu Sportnmen . Many people have asked ( he question a » to the meaning ant ] necessity of the kaiser s muff which appears in the pictures of the emperor in hunting scenes . A Berlin newspaper is authority for the statement that the muff is neither an affectation nor intended to conceal n crippled hand , but is called the Jagd , and is a very essential part of a German hunter s equipment , says the New York Journal . Bunting parties break up at about one or two in the morning in the late autumn nnd wait at certain points of the forests until the game , usually rleer , pass on their way to the drinking grounds . As the German autumn nights are bitterly cold , a protection for the hands must be provided—hence a muff . Tliis article is usually made of bears fur , or any other very warm « kin , has a rather flat shape , enabling the hands to be pulled out at once , so as to be free for actio...
