TOM SPEINGr , [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 29 October 1853

TOM SPEINGr , LIFE AND BATTLES OF 1 ME BUTGH ^ n , CHAMPION OF ENGLAND IN 1824 . From a work published in London in 1829 , now first republished in thisoountry , , in the N EW YORK CLIPPER . ] In consequence of the friends of Slielton forfeiting to Spring , a match was proposed between Oliver and Spring ; but the bad state of Olivers hand prevented it . The lackers of Spring , it appears , were determined to give him an opportunity of raising himself in the opinion of the amateurs , and he was matched against Carter , who had , for the last two years and a half , challenged , all England , as ihe Champion . The stakes were £ 50 a-side , and a £ 50 purse to be ¦ riven by the Pugilistic Club . The odds were high in favor of Carter , and the backers of Spring asked 2 lo l . The above battle was decided , on the 4 th of May , 1819 , at Crawley Down , immediately after Randall and Martin had left the Ring . Carter was seconded by Oliver and Donnelly ; and Spring was attended by Cribb and...

DEFEAT OF BRONSON JN THRKK STRAfo slT ROUNDS , j GREAT EXCITEMENT THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES . This great event , which has been looked forward to for some few months past , was brought to a termination on Monday last , aftor a sharp and unprecedently exciting contest of three straight rounds . The parties , Bronson nnd Guthrie , have not been on terms of intimacy since the former took up his residence in New York , and tho slightest pretext was only wanting to bring the parties into collision . This opportunity occurred at the late meeting of the political party known as Soft Shells , in the Park . At that meeting , Bronson seeing a good opening for making himself felt , knocked down several of tha roost prominent men belonging to the Softs ; and not only this , but he leagued himsel...

His Card to the Public There still seems much dissatisfaction expressed at the manner in whioh the late battle was terminated , and the decision of the Reforee . It was supposed that the Referee would have made a statement of all the circumstances connected with the affair in order that the public at large could have an opportunity to judge for themselves , how far his conduct was justified in deciding as he did , and in giving that decision whilst the ring was filled with outsiders . We have received no statement , however , from the gentleman referred to , and suppose he intends to make none . The challenge from Sullivan , which we published in our last , was not accepted by Morrisey , but the following card has since been put forth by him , which of course can receive no attention , while the ohallen...

Another Murder in Embryo . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 29 October 1853

Another Murder in Embryo . Capt . Bigelow , of the Steamer Michigan , lately challenged the editor of the Chicago Tribune to mortal combat , for certain remarks made in that journal concerning the said Captain . The Tribune , Times , and other moral papers of this city publish all the particulars of tliis « disgraceful affair , without a word of comment . Perhaps they consider the brutal pastime of duelling honorable to the parties concerned in it . Will the editor of the Daily Times send to the governor of Massachusetts for a requisition V All Greek . Manypersons have heard of the musical cricket of the Tribune , but few read the said crioket s criticisms . In an article in the Tribune of Friday last , the cricket gave a description of the performance at Jullien s Concert the evening previous , in the course of which article the following passage occurs : The andante may be signalized as a model of instrumentation in its school , and graceful to the last degree . THE BEGINNING OF THE END . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 29 October 1853

THE BEGINNING OF THE END . Uncle Tom s Cabin at the Chatham Theatre . When this play was first announced for performance at the Chatham Theatre , in this city , we denounced it in strong terms , on the ground of its being calculated to open afresh the breach which had just been closed between the different sections of the Union . The newspapers of our city , some of which had been loud in their denunciations of abolitionism , and all agitation of the Slavery question , assisted in the production of the . drama by favorable notices : The New York Clipper stood alone at that time in its opposition to the intended gag about to be forced upon the people visiting the Chatham . The play was produced , however , and met the approval of every editor and reporter in this city , with one or two exceptions . Owing to the favorable notices of the press , the theatre was well filled at each performance . Greeley , very cunningly , helped along the gag , though we believe he had never noticed the...

THE RIJTO . —We have seldom known an excitement reach to such a pitch as that occasioned by the late display offered by onr pugilistic friends . Still , the conversation on the ring is not confined exclusively to the masculine , for many of those angelic beings of the feminine gender have talked of nothing else but the ring for a long time past ; but that our readers may not fall into error on the subject , we might here remark that the ladies subject was the wedding ring , which can be had in great variety at .
