Wednesday evening the orators and delegates repaired to Monmouth College , where the first event of contest week was to be inaugurated , viz : a BANQUET given in their honor by the ladies of Monmouth . The reception embodied all that that term implies . Cold reserve and undue formality were cast aside . The beautiful belles of Monmouth smiled auspicously on ye bashful boys . . The latter emboldened reciprocated . Faint hearts revived , the timid were reclaimed . In fact the situation was rendered tenaciously tenable . The address of welcome...

LITERARYDEPARTMENT, [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 November 1877
LITERARYDEPARTMENT, MANFORD SAVAGE . THE TWO LYRES . ] Translated from the German of Anastasius Green by 1 KAKI .. ] Thrilling through my inmost spirit Are two Lyres always near ; Wildly one peals forth its music , But the others soft and clear . And two pow rs , forever hostile , Give vibrations to the strings ; Like a storm one sweeps the cordage , One as light as angel wings . As the maddened foaming torrent Wildly leaps from rock to rock , As the heavy bolted thunders In the mountain passes shock , As the fall of avalanches In the narrow valleys staid . So within niv ho .-oin riii . ^ sr . ;^ Oft one harp is fiercely plaped .

LITERARY DEPARTMENT , [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 December 1877
LITERARY DEPARTMENT , MANFORD SAVAGE . MIRACLES . In the October No . 1877 of the ILLINI there appeared an article , entitled Magic and Miracles by A . W . P . Philomathean Society . We suppose , with all deference to the society , that the initials stand for A Wise Philomathean . This is a mere conjecture however . It is not the intent of this article to criticize the gentlemans essay , but only to present its opinion on the subject of miracles as distinct from magic . We concede all that the gentleman says concerning the existence and prevalence of and the belief in witchcraft . If , however , the gentleman uses as an argument against miracles , the fact that the belief in magic and witchcraft once existed and does not now , we beg leave to differ and as boldly assert that it is an argument in favor of the present belief in miracles . If people did see the absurdity in witchcraft , it did not shatter their faith in miracles . The evidence in favor of the latter is too strong and t...
" TRIMMING . " [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 December 1877
TRIMMING . In many private grounds and in some of our public parks the trees and shrubbery are trimmed into various queer and unnatural shapes . We have sometimes seen a spruce so trimmed as to present the appearance of a number of globes one upon the other . Again , different varieties of trees represent domes , pyramids or any form the imagination may suggest ! Vines are cut and kept back in growth until they become miniature trees and the cherry tree is forced to assume the shape of the grapevine . A landscape of such objects as these may perhaps be pleasing to the eye for a few minutes but we soon tire of it . Everything is too artificial , too rigid . We long for the grand old trees of the forest , fashioned by nature . But trees and shrubs are not the only things deprived of their beauty and usefulness by this excessive trimming . God s hig hest creations in untold numbers are being dwarfed , ruined by this trimming process . By it human beings are so completel y stunted that ...
A SIMPLE STORY IN ELEGANT LANGUAGE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 December 1877
A SIMPLE STORY IN ELEGANT LANGUAGE . On Thusday mouning I saw about thurty buds sitting upon the fence . When I came to the doah the thud one from me was singing . Oh cteah the sight was absolutely enchawnting ,. I wished the turm was ovah so I could depawt foah my home , wheah in the pawks there are many buds . At this moment my sistah was getting a drink of water I called to huh to obsuve the buds , as she tuned she frightened them . I could almost puceive thcah little hots beat with feah . Although the wind blew very hard and it was very cold the buds in theah worm clothing of feathers seemed very happy , and thankful to thcah creataw . As I was going to close the doah I hud a noi . se , I tunc ! and beheld a cruel man in the act of shooting . A moment moah the report of the gun was hud and foah poah buds lay dying upon the graws . As the poah dawlings looked into his eyes I wandawd if the hotless man thought of Gawd who gave them life as well as himself . At the close of this af...
FORGIVENESS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 December 1877
FORGIVENESS . My heart was heavy , for its trust had been Abused , its kindness answered with foul wrong ; So , turning gloomily from my fellow men , One summer Sabbath day I strolled among The green mounds of the villiage burial-place ; Where , pondering how all human love and hate Find one sad level ; and how , soon or late , Wronged and wrongdoer , each with meekened face , And cold hands folded over a still heart , Pass the green threshold of our common grave , Whither all footsteps tend , whence none depart , Awed for myself , and pitying my race , Our common sorrow , like a mighty wave , Swept all my pride away , and trembling , I forgave !
