? I GOOD ADVICE ABOUT ID I CREAM SEPARATORS I Announcement of the Alpena Farm Produce Co . In the Alpe- Mam na , Mich ., Argus , Feb . 13 , 1907 . "In reply to i ^ iuirles we wish to repeat that the Alpena Farm Produce Co . will not buy cream that is not separated by a cream separator , for the reason they must have pure , clean cream , which can be obtained in no other manner . Therefore W ™ M every patron of the company musl have a separator , and if you K * m have not already procured one , you had better see about it in the very near future . The Produce Co . Is very emphatic in its assertion that it does not matter what kind of a separator is used , so long as it Is a good standard make . Do not buy " cheap ' separators first because some 'mail order' house catalog says it is the best in the world . The fact is that 'cheap' separators WyM are always the dearest in the end . In the first place they do ' . V'J not skim as closely , and in the next place they will not stand Wrnai the test of years . If you have a'cheap' separator , not a stand -ard make , you must not complain if you do not make as much money from your cows as you thought you would . The Produce Co . Is handling the DE LAVAL separator because they can safely recommend it as an absolutely reliable machine . If that w ^ m machine does not prove satisfactory , the trouble must then be with the manner in which you care for and feed your cows . Be sure you start with a good machine . " The big creamery concerns which look the country and the world over in reaching separator conclusions are almost I invariably users and endorsers of the DE LAVAL machines . Their example and advice is the kind that the inexperienced B 3 buyer may safely and wisely follow . A SILO WANTED . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 9 March 1907

A SILO WANTED . We are about to build a silo and I take the liberty to ask you a few questions in regard to it . Is it necessary to ceil with hard pine , if we have chestnut , white and black oak , cucumber and what is called hickory whitewood . on our farm and a saw mill within one mile ? What style and what dimensions for silo when there about 10 cows and from 2 to 4 head of young cattle , and 4 horses to feed?—H . F . A ., Hiram , O . With the price of hard pine advanced to $ 42 per M , at the local lumber yards , there is no little inquiry as to substituting home lumber , and where one has oak , chestnut , and other good varieties for the trouble of sawing , we would say , use the home lumber . Hard pine is used because it Is durable and shrinks and swells the least of any of our lumbers . The hard pine lining of our old silo , built In 1886 , is still sound , and never shrank or swelled as we could notice , although it has been filled eighteen times . If I were the inquirer , I...

THE QUALITY OF MILK . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 9 March 1907

THE QUALITY OF MILK . Through the columns of The Ohio Farmer , let me oppose a suggestion made at the annual meeting of the Ohio dairyman s Association held at Columbus , Ohio , recently . A very interesting and instructive talk was given by Mr . Ivan C . Weld of the Dairy Division of the Bureau of Animal Industry . at Washington . D . C , on the subject of Sanitary Milk . Following this , he gave the scoring of several samples of bottled milk submitted for competition and intended for general delivery to customers . The scoring was in accord with the official score card , and all the samples averaged high , although there was a wide range in similar items of the different samples . The butter fat varied from 4 to 7 percent . Then it was that one member of the association , taking a bottle of each of the extremes in butter fatjield them up , saying : The cream in this 6 percent doesnt show much more than the 4 percent ; and in fact , it didnt show extravagantly In its favor , becaus...
