Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 August 1914
Too Much Farm Machinery ? By A . H . Beaton , University oi Minnesota . A difficult problem on the American farm is to decide how much and what kind of machinery should be purchased . Some farms are so overstocked with machinery that the depreciation , interest and repairs eat up much of the profits . . . Assuming the average depreciation on machinery at 10 per cent , and the interest on the money invested at 6 per cent , we have an average yearly expense of approximately $ 13 on each $ 100 invested in machinery . A man who has $ 1 , 500 worth of machinery would have $ 195 expense on this alone in interest and depreciation . If his work could be done with half this amount , he could save $ 97 . 50 . This would be equivalent to the interest on $ 1 , 625 at 6 per cent . A farm of eighty acres cannot profitably use four-horse machinery , because three horses should do the work on a farm of this size . In buying machinery too large in proportion to the size of the farm unnecessary expen...

PoyLW [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 August 1914
PoyLW Advice to the Farmer Produce only infertile eggs for market , as they do not spoil so easily as fertile ones . Dispose of the roosters as soon as the eggs needed for hatching are obtained . The eggs keep better and the hens will lay just as many of them . Provide plenty of clean nests with clean straw in them . Gather eggs twice daily in hot weather and store them in a cool , sweet , wellventilated place , but do not store where damp . Do not wash eggs . Market eggs as often as possible and carry them gently . Do not sell eggs from stolen nests . Use them at home . Protect eggs from the sun when taking them to market Eggs exposed to hot sunshine for one hour will spoil ; this applies to infertile as well as fertile eggs . Insist upon having your eggs candled by the purchaser so that he may know that he is buying good eggs and pay accordingly . You will thus reap the advantage for the care you have given them . ^^^ l s ^ H Cash in the Old Hen By Jsmss Hslpia , University of Wis...

September [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 September 1914
September School days are on again . * * * Be sure to go to both county and state fairs . * * * Keep a weather eye peeled for hog cholera . There will be a lot of it this fall . * * * Apple butter is a homely and much appreciated staple that will make use of a lot of apples that would otherwise be lost . * * * Remember ! This is seed corn month . Save at least twice as much as you need . Pick it by bund before thc last day of September . * * * How are the pumpkins looking ? Chop up some for the hogs , thc calves and the dairy cows , and save some for pumpkin p ies next winter . * * * These next two months are thc finest . The harvest months when the air begins to brace and Indian summer is on is when everything looks its best in preparation for winter . * * * You still have time to put up one or two stave silos . This last month has been awfully dry . and it will be a temptation to sell grain instead of feed it with war prices ruling . * * * Pick up the windfalls and make some cider...
