—or— ^ B i ^ sSHBMHIMBl LEWISES & BROOKS . HOW AND WHERE to dispose of my wool to tbe best advantage ts the question asked by every grower as tho season for tha eUpplng comes around . Wool , unlike grain , pork , flour and other products , is not sold on change by sample or on the certificate of an Inspector , and having no fixed standard by which it , l « bought and sold , Its value depending on the length and strength of staple , the quality of fibre and condition , ctc . it oan only be determined by a thorough examination by those experienced in handling it , and as no two lots of wool are near enough alike in all respects to be of the same value , a report of the sale of one or a dozen lots of wool does not determine the prices any other lots wiU bring ; hence the difficulty the grower labors under In getting any definite Information to aid him In sell * Ing his wool , and the necessity of seeking some otber - channel through which to dispose of it tnun-ia necessary ...

% t gimtk [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 20 June 1868

\ % \\ t gimtk Another { testation . It seems some readers of THK WESTERN RCBAL were surprised at my article , The Tyranny of Men s Fashions , and a correspondent tells me I am losing my faithful allies—my sworn friends , and that some of themwonder lt I am not an old maid with a , nom de plume : I am not such an enthusiastic admirer . of man-kind that I cannot see their follies , and show them up , too . Tis true I have taken up the pen In their defense npon sundry occasions , when I thought they had not had fair play , and knew they were too deeply hurt to vindicate themselves . But have I not as frequently taken np the pen ln favor of , and in defense of , the women ? Believe me , dear sisters , I feel most deeply our Inferior position , the many disadvantages under which we labor , the limited amount of help and the little sympathy we receive from men—especially farmers wives and daughters . If you will find me one man who treats his wife as his equal , and his daughters as the ...

MMm fi ( SJflttwtv The Pet Squirrels . BT IBM E . RBZFOBD . One day Hr . Stanley came ln from the field , where he had been at work , with something ln his hands . His two children , Gerty and John , ran to see what lt was that he carried so carefully . They knew by the look he gave them that lt was something for them . What have you got , father ? said John , eager with curiosity . What do you think ? said Hr . Stanley . A bird , I guess , said Gerty . Not quite , he said , opening his hands and showing tbem two queer looking little creatures , not a great deal larger than a mouse , all covered with short brown hair . What are they ? asked John , at a loss to know the name of such strange looking animals . Young squirrels , answered his father , putting them down on the cushion ot the rocking-chair . OhI well keep them , wont we , Johnnie ? cried Gerty in great delight at the addition to lier list of pets . Where did you get em ? asked Johnnie . There was a large tree in the field ...

THE POULTRY YARD [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 20 June 1868

THE POULTRY YARD Pigeons . BY LT .-COL . HA 88 ABD , BEFORE THE ONTARIO POULTRYASSOCIATION . I find that ln both Ontario , and Quebec the climate seems to suit the birds . In the severest winters many may be seen about the stores at Quebec ; and provided they get shelter at night under a roof , the cold does not seem to annoy them . This applies to the common sorts . I can also state , from actual experience , that I have not found the high fancy birds suffer from cold if kept as they might be In a loft or shed , over a stable , or any building where they can perch secure from draughts of wind and wet . Mv carriers are the very best English strains . I often had sick birds in England from their being so very highly cfj . V , ma v say that I never had a sick bird In Canada ; , and the eye disease which 6 ? , ?« attacks carriers , has but verv sightly appeared , and that only once , last Ing a , couple of days , in a very heavy-eyed specimen . . Pigeons require to be kent verv cleAr ,...

- THE APIARY , [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 20 June 1868

- THE APIARY , Upward Ventilation in Hives . Without presuming to advance any ideas that are new , I wish to say a few words respecting moisture in hives . Every observant apiarist knows that va por Is constantly generated and thrown off by the cluster of bees . This vapor comes in contact with cooler air , and Is condensed ; and in severe cold weather it accumulates in the hive ln the form of frost , often within an inch or two of tbe cluster . If tbe cold weather is very long continued , and the bees consume what little honey there is In the combs covered by the cluster , the colony starves with plenty of honey In tbe hive . If the cold weather is of short duration , and a day following sufficiently warm with the beat from the bees , to melt tbe frost , the water runs down the sides of the hive to tbe bottom board . There it asain freezes , sometimes closing the entrance of the hive with ice , and causing the death of the bees by suffocation . If we bouse them during the Winter , ...
