(Sold is America lis First Discovery by tlio Frc-Hlstonc Indians In a recent speech delivered in the Ilottso of Representatives,. R. B. Vani-e, member of Congress from North Caro lina, said that the first discovery of gold in the United States was mado in Meck lenburg, in that State, in 1820. A cor respondent of a North Carolina newspa per corrects this statement, saying that the first gold was found in Cabarrus in 1799, and refers to Wheeler's "History of North Carolina" for evidence Old chroniclers give an account of a provinco called Cofachiqui, which was visited by DeSoto's gold-hunting expe dition in 158840, and which was em braced in what afterward became the States of Florida, Georgia, Alabama,and Mississippi, and, according to Logan, in his history of "Upper Carolina' had its ccntor on tho western limits of South Carolina. Bottled Dumblc-Bccs. No man can tell when a boy of nine or ten years is going to break out in a new sport. A Uass farm lad, who has been noted for h'B quiet demeanor and Btoady ways, all at onco took a notion to hunt bumblo-bees. Ho armed himself with a wide-mouthed bottle aud tramped over lots and fields and entrapped many a luckless stinger. After securing them ho had no further pleasure except to see them crawl up and down the sides of the bottle and whack their stingers into each other. Ho was out early yes terday morning, gathering in tho bees while they woro benumbed, and when ho entered the houso for breakfast ho had about thirty, great, overgrown, wicked-looking bumble-bees.
