Farm and Home. Composition or Soil. A writer In the country Gentleman prci the followering timelf statement on thU subject: "Every farmer knews that the fundamental character of good soil is sand, day and decay ed vegetable matter, or humus. These im portant constituents vary greatly in their pro portions. A strong day soil has 5 to 15 per cent, ofsilicious sand. Clay loam has 15 to 30 ix I cent, of fine sand. A loamy soil has 30 to 60 per cent, of sand; a sandy loam, 60 to go per cent, and a sandy soil has no more than o per cenL of clay, and often less, as it be comes more barren. A strong clay soil, by constant cropping, is robbed of its accumula tions ul vegetable matter, and soon becomes too compact for tho roots of plants to pen etrate lreety. Its ioiDrorement is much quicker and more certain that the other ex tremes of sand, but tho same process must be employed.
