Xoo ikvaltl. CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. TUESDAY SKPT. 15, 1874. The HERALD'S article In Sunday morning's Ustie, recommending Mr. Beavdry for Mayor appears to meet the approval of the great majority of our citizens. Mr. Bkacdry is recog nized as a progressive man and the fact that he is opposed by tho nna conda that has so long tightened its folds around the city, makes him the more popular with the people. It is probable Senator Jones will leave to-day for San Francisco. He will bear away with hitn favorable impressions of Los Angelos and her people, which we tru~t will induce Another and more prolonged visit at an early day. got 3Vnflctes IrtiU, CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. WEDNESDAY SEPT. It!, 187 L To-day is the anniversary ot the In dependence of Mexico. The event will be duly celebrated by our Mexi can population. An Oregon paper, describing Gen. O. O. Howard, says he is "rather a small man." This exactly accords with our idea of the General. The editor of the San Francisco Post is constantly worrying over the loss of vested rights. He will keep on at this until he is invested with one of those vests they call straight-jackets. Elsewhere we publish the resolu tion ofthe Compton Grange denounc ing the proposed change of school text books. The action of this Grange on this very important subject should be imitated by every Grange in the State. The Express complains that we do not give it credit for telegraphic dis patches. We do not see why we should. It keeps a standing line an nouncing that it is the only paper in Los Angeles that takes dispatches, and as the Mirror has never disputed the propositi...

£0$ iievaiil. CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. THURSDAY SEPT. 17, 1874. It Is understood that parties owning large interests in (he Panamint mines are completing arrangements foff hauling large quantities of ore to the water at Wilmington, whence it will be shipped on board the Panama steamships and sent on to Swansea, England, where it will be thoroughly tested and the value of the mines es tablished. A number of teams about San Bernardino are already engaged to do the hauling nnd will commence work in a few days. We presume this enterprise has been inaugurated at tbe suggestion of Senator Jones, who has invested heavily in those mines. The statement made in yesterday morning's Herald to the effect that the nearest water to Mrs. mill, during the tire the other nigh! which the firemen could find was dis tant from the flames just far enough to require every foot of hose the Fire Department had in use, was some thing of a mistake. The annual meeting of the Gran gers' Bank of California for tlie elec tion of Directors will be held at the office of the Bank in San Francisco on Thursday the third day of October. Los Angeles Valley is not a good placo for newspapers to send those of their attaches that they would retain. Within the last two weeks the corres pondents of two San Francisco jour nals have located here—one in this city aud the other at Anaheim. The narrow-gauge railroad connect ing Salinas and Monterey will be completed by the end of this month. It is eighteen and a half miles long and including rolling stock wharf and warehouses will cost a quarter of a million dollars. It is ow ned by the Grangers and shows what they can do. The press of advertisements on our columns this morning forces out a considerable amount of reading mat ter already in type.
