The Tensas Gazette. ST. JOSEPH, - - - LA.' FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1909. AIWIR . GREEEN, - - EDITOR. 0VSV3 RItIPTION V KAKLY In Adv.nre. $1.50 BURN YOUR STALKS. In the fight Against the boll weevil the first essential is the early destruction of the cotton stalks. That this is absolutely essential we believe has been suf flcieutly demonstrated both in the tests made by State and National departments, and in the practi cal application of our planters. This cutting and burning of the stalks should be done, where possible, before the plant has been killed by frost or has entire ly shed its foliage. In some cases this may mean the sacrifice of a few unopened bolls, but. the chances are that these holls have been punctured and would not mature. But even were this hot the case, the small loss that may possibly accrue through early de struction of stalks will be more than offset by the greater num ber of weevil that are thus de stroyed. This stalk destruction should not wait on the completion o...

By John K. Le Baron. -\ Y of the interesting events in history and literature have been   Stho result of what Cervantes would term "A very happy acci di nt."t Important results are often the fruit of trifling incidents. Gibbon tells us that his visit to Rome in 1764 was with no thou;ght of writing its history, but. while musing among its ruins on that October day "the idea of writing the Decline and Fall of the city first started to my mind." To that chance visit to the Eternal City literature owes one of its most valued hi.tric.al possessions.
