Dur ing their stay In that city some of them have succeeded in interesting caplt.il in their claims and will prosecute extensive development work throughout the hum mer. Those of this ctty interested in mines and mining have long known of the ex istence of copper in paying quantities in the Seven Devils, but after Investigating the country have come to the conclusion that owing to the Inaccessibility of the re gion transportation facilities would never be obtained to haul the product of the mines to a smelter, so have not Interested themselves much in the country. Holly returned yesterday from the Cable Cove district, where he is In terested In a group of claims with J. W. McVicker, regarding which a story was puDllsded in these columns several weeks since. Mr. Holly, like all others who own property In that vicinity, is enthu siastic over the outlook In the district, where more work Is being done than In any other In eastern Oregon. He says that though he believes that he Is In on a bonanza proposition himself, there Is scarcely a doubt but what the best mines are on Big Limber creek. THE SUMPTER MINER Wednesday, May i, 1901 SHAKESPEARE AS A MINER. Evidence of His Familiarity with the Industry. In a remote camp in California an hon est miner was recently discovered who sol aced himself with Shakesp;are under all vicissitudes of fortune, says the American Mining News. He had (lie divine Wil liam at his linKers' ends and could quote him by (he yard. Newspapers of the west wrote him up as a prodigy of learn lug and philosophy, but several of the east, where wisdom and wealth run cheek by joa-I, twitted him for neglecting the plcl and drill to prospect in the sterile re gions of blank verse. Shakespeare, said those wiseacres, never did anything for legitimate mining, and why in thundera tion could'nt horny-handed miners leave Shakespeare alone? Now, If those carpers had known a little more, about bath ends of this grand subject, they would have instinctively recognized the practical as well as the ethical side of the California miners' fav orite study, Everybody know...

Wednesday, May i, loi THE SUMPTER MINER 1 1 MINE RUN BY MEDIUM. Money Spent Under Direction of a Spiritualist. A press dispatch from Nelson, British Columbia, says that consultation with mediums by prospectors who have a lean ing towards the occult is common enough to excite little or no curiosity, but the spectacle of a big property operated on ' plans laid down by a medium Is unique. Such a spectacle Is afforded by the King Solomon, on Woodbury creek, about 30 miles from this city. Up to the present time the spirits which animate the medium seem to have fallen down in their reading of the ground, for It is patent to all who are familiar with the situation that the company is not getting enough ore to make scarf pins for the management. The King Solomon Mining company, which should not be confused with the King Solomon property at Alnsworth, operated by L'r. Wingate, of Spokane, controls 2000 acres of mineral land, ex tending from Kootenay lake for six miles up Woodbury creek. The ...
