. r-.. ' s ' t 't. FJlKM AND HOME. Unporfitable Cotton and Rice. The Charleston News and Courier says : " It is a settled fact that the eea island cotton and rice cannot be produced with profit, at present prices, with our present system of labor. An exceptionally good planter, here and there, may continue to succeed ; but the fact that three-fourths of the sea island cotton .lands and one half of the rice lands under cultivation in I860 are now thrown out, proves that the average cannot make money. On North Santee alone, as wo are informed,' oaly three rice plantations are now culti vated out of eighteen in 1SG0, and it was shown in a report made last summer to the agricultural society that, in our our coast counties, over four hundred thou sand acres of land have been thrown out of cultivation since 1860. Are these lands to remain idle, or shall we make an-ejfort to utilize them again 1" The News and Courier urges p'anters in the low coun try to raisa wheat, and instances proof to...

FAK3I AND UOJ1E. How to Use Fertilizer. t .The ScientiSc Ameiican, cxceUen v fcathorit j, says on thia subject ; In general, the use of a single fertilizer . .. will be found profitable aa & farm prac tice only in connection with manure or on land in strong heart, and the poor farmer will never succeed in enhancing the cropping capacity of hia farm to an .J increased profitable position through the uae of one fertilizer alone. Much of the discredit which artificial feitilizera have won haa risen from a non appreciation of the fact that they cannot eupersede dang, but must be used in connection with other plant food. A euperphosphate or a nitrogenom, or a potassic manure can always find place on a farm, but can never take the place of manure in farm practice, and the sooner this false hope is destroyed, the better U will be for all con cerned. A mixture of chemicals or other elements containing the food that plants require does, however, offer promise of practical results, on the...
