r C Verbal ritfalls. A nice, very useful little book Ison the table of the Journal, published by Cf. V. Burden, yractfse, N. Y. It contains some fifteen hundred words commonly misused, and, by studying what Is said about them one will get a clear idea as to hun dreds of other words misused In talking and writing. It will estab lish a habit of criticism which is much needed. For Instance, "capa cious" is a word used fdr "large," ns a "capacious rent In hiscosturue." mm word means ability to hold or coutalu. Used Improperly It sounds 'like au Irishman's definition of a net as "holes tied together by a striug." So, character is wrongly used for reputation, when character describes what one is and reputation what one is esteemed to be, you can say "be ls'a bad character; ho has a bad reputation1." Sanitary and 'san atory aro used "indiscriminately, whereas they have different mean ings. Also tho use of differ with aud from is" distinctly pointed 'out. And so on. Tho work discloses a tho...
