[Written for the Placer Times.] City IVin-tlliiiu* No 1. tl V A SACR AM X N I A N THE CITY. (roNTiMrn ) It would be a strange spectacle to our brethren of the Federal States to witness the present development of this wonderful city, tins miracle of growth and progress. Like Aladdin's palace, it seems to have sprung from the magic of an incantation. A tumultuary gathering of tents but a few months since, it now presents to the eye the most harmonious and tasteful structures of wood, rich in manifold instances, with the justest pretensions to architectural display. The useful is fast giving way to the ornamental. Canvass has disappeared, the days of wooden palaces are numbered. Stately structures of brick are arising in our midst, and will soon supersede all the memorials of a ruder time. Numerous and well ordered hotels supply every dainty for the palate. The comforts of life, nay, its very luxuries, are flowing in from every quarter. The Drama, the Ballet, the Amphitheatre, the Arts...

Surgical Operation. A surgical operation has recently been performed in our City of Sacramento, by Dr. Andariese, in the case of St. George Scarlet, Esq. which, for morbid structure involved, and important results to be gained, is of important interest. It consisted in the removal of two "encysted tumors" of the adipose saccomatous" character, existing together in the same region of the body, so as to be embraced in the same operation.— These tumors, though in close relation to each ether, being separated only by the filamentous tissue, were enclosed in their respective sacs, with independent and extensive adhesion to the surrounding parts, and strange attachments to the ligaments of the processes of the lumbar vertebrae. # The ini])ortance which attaches to this operation arises, first,' from the locality of these tumor*. The patient had been led to beliefs that the diseased mas* originated with caries of the ■-pine, and noopei-ation hiid*bccn deemed tidvisablcTor fear of its provi...

E>t < ;ifli of Francis Jeffrey. The latest news from Europe is accompanied with the mournful (licence of the death of I ord Jeffrey. We know of no recent event of the kind that has produced more sad and sorrowful emotions. As the news sweeps over the earth, the hear! of civilized humanity will feel its chorda of sorrow stricken in their most sacred relations. Spirit of the l»»« **. [Newspaper Article] — Placer Times — 5 June 1850

Spirit of the l»» « **. , "San Francisco Herald."— Ah we have had to stand fight for. intimating that this is a free country, we prefer to have the credit for that article on "the slave case," attributed to our more prudent friends of the Transcript, who don't mean to put their foot in.it if they can help it. Owing to the indefatigable exertions of tho agents here we were in possession of an early copy of the second number of this really hand-, some paper— only we were not — but the difference is, merely a quarter", and ire love to encourage "foreign talent." The City Council in San Francisco have made themselves about as unpopular as our old one did. They will have to back down right off, and clear out, the first chance. For particulars see the "Frisco 11 papers — we are brim full of our own affairs. The Alta California would make it appear that the Sonoma route is the best to the Trinity Mine«, at least •<> they are told. OF course wo don't believu in it beca...
