Oarn.-Tkt Jladrstr mf Hicranimlt [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Herald — 14 February 1851

Oarn.-Tkt Jladrstr mf Hicranimlt It n a fact very generally conceded, that our present Representatives in the lower branch of Congress have been of very little service to the State.— Their terms expire on the 4lh proximo. The election is not to take place until the first Monday in October next, unless our present election laws be amended. £n any event the people will have time to canvass the merits of aepirants for the seats to be vacated by Messrs. Wright and Gilbert, and we are sure that the men next selected will be cboaeu by the people, and not by a few politicians. The Plarer Timet of the Sth inst. presented the names and urged the claims of several Sacramenlaris for Members of Congress. Each one was said to be *' prominent," or a man of " fearless independence," or of " consideration," Ac. Now we have not a word to say agninst the character of any of the men paraded by the Timet; on the contrary we believe them all to be fair men, but we do insist that Sacramento City it not t...

Letter fr«« Mtleiat. I Si »«u>TO Citt, Feb. 7th,lSslj Dkab Cot:—l had no idea at all you would dare to put in print the letter I last wrote you. and you may judge of my horror when my private thought! and carelen musings (tared me full in the face, as 1 ail uneonsciou* glanced over your paper while lipping my coffee. It i* really too bad, but it cannot be mended; in future 1 shall write for the public, and be more watchful in my penning* of person# as well as incidents. Society has taken " a place," in this city of Sacramento; the first of a series ot lectures under the patronage of''The Mercantile Library Association" was given a few evenings since at a meeting house on 6th street. Col. Z. favored ua with an eloquen? and learned lecture on ancient and modern philosophy, followed by an appropriate and feeling appeal by Mr. W. in favor of the institution. A poem was »hen recited by Col. K. in his most happy manner. His delivery and the words I know must have pleased all wh...

A LIUU «T BrerrAlM- [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Herald — 14 February 1851

A LIUU «T BrerrAlM- If man wai Bade in the image of hit maker, sorely woman was designed to 'keep him still in remembrance of heaven. When a man reflect* upon paradise. and asks hM mind for a something , earthly that resembles it, he can think of woman, and noihing else. Picture innocence, youth, and beau- , tv in woman, and if yon do not see par- . adise, go lo an oculist immediately, for depend upon it. there is something the matter with your eyes. On the Plaza in San Francisco, in i front of Bereford's Express office and the Union Hotel, French boot blacks i are as thick as bees. Their charge is ;isc each, and they have as much as they can do all day. One of these boot blacks had a diamond ring on his first finger! Was not that California. all over? Punch says Mons. Julien has engaged a corps of Parisian drummers for the revival of the drum polka; and that a novel effect will be gained by the use of real drum sticks from the poultry, in a new composition, called the Turkey Galop....
