Ibf fail? Six Hoari With * Drtu>Mtktr. Everybody has heard of dress-makers, and every one professes to hold them in fear and dread, and yet we cannot live without them. '• Every woman her own dress-maker," is a beautiful fiction, and belongs to Utopia. At present the art is confined to a few, and its mysteries and ■elaborations are beyond belief. I have had some experience ! There was much work to be done, and only a limited time in which to do it} our priestess was in demand, and must fly from us to minister at another altar. Of course we must secure what T,-e could of the mysteries. In order to help 011 in this time of need, I sat me down and busily plied the needle with the rest. 1 stitched, and gathered, and corded, and plaided, and gauged, for six hours. I rose from my experience a sadder and a wiser woman. 1 had sewed a piece of my finger in the work, which was a small evil ; I had bent forward, in my zeal, till I brought on a fit of dyspepsia : my back and sides ac...

iThc il.uln Appeal. Siipi-mie Court Dcelxlnii. Kox v. Brissac was n suit for trespass brought to reeover damages tor an entry upon real estate in plaintiffs possession. The question involved was as tlie right of the landlord to enter for a breath of covenant in the lease, and forcibly eject the tenant. The opinion, by Justice Baldwin, says that the e.irh Knglish authorities asser; this right on the part of the landlord ; but modern decisions, and the reason and policy ofthe law are opposed to it. Judgment for pluintill was affirmed. Standard. figg*" In a district in I'pper Canada, the other day. the magistrates refused to issue the necessary warrant for th» arrest of a man who was suspected of having dc-t stroved his own child, because »t would cost fifty dollars to liold an inquest upon the child, and the charge might nut be true.

The Signs Political. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 29 February 1860

The Signs Political. The election of Pennington to the Speakership, and the s-oon following choice of Forney, us Clerk of the House ot Representatives, and the subsequent election of Hoffman us Sergennt-ut-arms, seem to us very "significant facts. Taken in connection with the reported action of leading members of the Republican and Ai.icrican parties, the combination of all ■ the elements of opposition to the present administration, or. in other words, to the ' dominant Democracy, would seciu to be ! foretold. Th? most notable obstacle in the way of this combination, and the most serious hindrance to its success, is shadowed forth in the "Constitutional Union Meeting," held in Philadelphia, to which such prominent men as Edward j Everett. Millard Fillmore and John Minor j Botts, lent their encouragement. The movers in that mectiujr mnv lead (o the I formation of a third party, similar to that which cast its votes for Fillmore in the campaign of 18,it>, by which the propos...
