FRIDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 22, 1850 The iHn«l of Krhrnwry. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 22 February 1850

FRIDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 22, 1850 The iHn«l of Krhrnwry. To-day is the anniversary of one of the greatest events in American history- the day upon which George Washington was born. He was emphatically the Father of his Country and richly earned from his admiring countrymen and a grateful posterity that namo which will lift while tho world exists. Comments upon the man who is first in the hearts of his countrymen would be absurd. Hut other events are associated with this day. Three years ago a handful of Americans, mostly raw rocruits, who had scarco ever pmolt gunpowder, had fulleii back from Aqua Nueva upon tho ground mnco known as Huenn Vista. Opposed it them was an overwhelming forco, against whom it appoarod almost mildness to contond. lint tho cast was made and they were bound to utand tho hazard of tho die Hut two results could bo foreseen — cither to becomo conquerors or to ho massacred by an inhuman soldiery. When, stern and silent, that hand of truo Americans wore drawn up....

REVIEW OF I UK MAKKKT— Fkbruabt 22. The unsteady state of mercantile affairs existing during last few dajri lias subsided and in place is found usual conndence and ordinary operation in merchandise for home consumption and river demand. Last week considerable quantities were shipped to the Sacramento ; the demand this week has been limited. Ko important operations have taken , place since last review inaking^iltcratioiis of quotations necessary. Flour, Barley, tircau.stutfs generally, and provisions are firm at quotations and, with an upward tendency. House frames are very numerous and offered at low rates. — Lumber is still unsettled.
