Passing Thoughts. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 11 February 1901

Passing Thoughts. 8 (By ' Tiie Wandbher.') Interest in Municipal matters in Hay is certainly on the increase. As a general rule in country towns rate payers do not exercise their power at the ballot box as they should do, which is decidedly wrong. If more interest was taken in municipal elections, it would cause those who aspire to the honor to express their views on mat ters of current interest before election; and not compel ratepayers to merely vote for the man instead of measures. However, so far as the present elec tion is concerned the ratepayers have returned two gentlemen who will, I feel confident, give careful attention to the questions of the day in muni cipal matters. Mr L. S. C. Robert son is a well-known public man, taking an interest in all public bodies, such as the Hay Hospital, the Athenreum, and is an ardent supporter of sport of all descriptions. Mr Alexander, who led the poll for South Ward, has not been a very long resident of Hay, but dur ing the time he has b...

1 1 Death of Mr Arthur Tyson. The sad news reached Hay 011 Sun day afternoon that Mr. Arthur Tyson had passed away. The news of the death of the above gentleman came as a surprise, as the telegrams received of late by Mr Ilidgcock spoke of an im provement in his condition, and the news on Saturday read ' Distinct im provement to day.' EitiS'SiM-a!1 WiSSiifsn t!i Ejigl.'.iii! I Tito Goniiiiu Emperor left LoiiJun on Weilnewlay amid demonstrations ot unusual cordiality. The visit of Em peror William to England, snd though tlie c-wasioii vvtts, marks the re-cst:il-iishment of a L!'i)od uiiderstau(!in-- between his ?uaji.sty and the British nation. Mr. Barton comes out of his Shell. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 11 February 1901

Mr. Barton comes out of liis Shell. For several months during oue part of his political career Sir William Lyne played the part of a political oyster, and when questioned on any public matter he said that he refused to be drawn. Association with Sir William has evidently corrupted Mr. Barton for he has been playing the same game and pursuing the saino tactics. What there is or can be in the political atmosphere which the pro tectionists of this State continually breathe, or what reason they have for the secrecy and reserve which charac terise their ways protectionists bast can tell. There is an old book which says that men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. And it certainly does seem as if the Federal Premier aud some of his col leagues wish to do some evil political deeds of which they were ashamed. Mr. Deakjn aud Sir George Turner are more brazen 111 their determination to rob the working man. They make 110 secret of their intentions. Under the pretence ...

Heat and Gales in Victoria. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 11 February 1901

Heat aud tiales in Victoria. One of the most Wolent duststonns that has ever been experienced in Mel bourne swept over the city on Thurs day evening, and came as a fitting climax to a day of almost unprece dented heat. As the temperature began to fall iate in the afternoon ominiuus clouds gathered on the wes tern horizon and heralded a sudden change. It came shortly after 6 o'clock when jaded city folk were getting liome to their dinner. There was a sudden sound akin to the ' rushing, mighty wind,' and in an instant it seemed as j though the city had converted itself into a gigantic railway train, and was 'rushing with headlong speed through a tunnel. Outside nothing could he seen for several minutes hut an im penetrable grey wall, which completely shut out the light. Vehicles came to a standstill, and the trams, after en deavouring to maintain a snail's-pace motion amid the incessant clanging of warning bells, gave up the attempt, and waited till the storm should blow over. Luckles...
