Tuesday, May 17. Beforo Mr. I. S. Ponder. J.P. D. M'Coy, for being drunk and disorderly in Arglc-otreet, wao fined 5s or twclvo hours. Ho was also charged with uaing obscenn languago at the same time and place. Ho pleaded not guilty. The ovidence adduced disclosed that tho language used by defendant was of a very filthy nature. Ho wao fined £1 or 48 hours.

Affeal Case Against Rates, — Mr. Elliott ap pealed against the M03S Vale Council rating a paddock belonging to him at £4 rental value a year — tho amount of rate iu dispute being 3/7, Mr. Clifford, Council Clerk, and as ono of the valuators, said Mr. Elliott's land consisted of two $-acrc lots. La3t year tho land was assessed at £5, but owing to tho depressed times it was rcduced to £4. Other lots adjacent wese assessed at a higher rate, and no complaint had been made, showtug that tho assessment was a fair and reasonable one. Tho Bench asked Mr. Elliott if ho had any qifestiono to ask Mr. Clifford, and he replied, 'I watft to give tny evidence,' in a tono somewhat snpcr-oxalted.
