I Macleay farmors and shippers are having their backbone tested, and what the result will bo is of tlio deepest in terest to the people not only of the whole Macleay, but of tho north coast generally. For years the North Coast Company has held a monopoly of the Macleay shipping trade.; some oppo sition was once offered but tho North Coast Company reduced freights and crushed its rival, and freights were soon higher than over. Early this season Mr. Yehgbr removed his; steamers and river plant from the Rich nioiid River, trade and entered into the Macleay in competition with the North Coast Com pany. The latter all. at once began to see that the farmers down there had somo ' slight grievances' ; it had taken about a score of years to discover those grievances,- and they probably would not have been, discovered yet, if Mr. Yeagcr had not gone into the trade. At a meetiiig'at Bellinger Heads on Wed nesday night, to decide some on method of raising some testimonial to Mrs. Higgins and family, there were about 30 present, and Mr. T. K. RadelifTe'was in the chair. Mr. A. G. McLachlan was -appointed secretary, and, Mr. W. R. Cowdcry treasurer. A motion was carried in favor. of opening lists to provide a testimonial to Mrs. Higgins nnd family, and the secretary avcis instructed to prepare lists and place them in the hands of Messrs. D. Thompson, T. K. Radcliffc, F. R. H. Baker, W. T. Campbell, J. Frost (Nambucca Heads), H.Jordan (GrnEton), and C. Mosely (South Arm ferry). following were appointed a committee to carry out. all -additional ar rangements, — Messrs. T, K. Radclitfe, W. R. Cowdery, J. H. Pcrcival, F. R. H. Baker. G. S. GLENIFFER BAND OF HOPE. On August 3 t'jo Rev. A. Graham presided over a meeting of . the Gleniller Band of Hope. The Secretary (Mr. ' R. Mewton) being laid up with influenza Mr. -II. Joyce acted for him. Hymn 90 was sung and a pleasant programme was rendered. Recita tions were nicely given' by Annie Dowle, Nellie Donaldson, Georgio Rowan, Nellie Brownlee, Lena and A'lce Rowan, Lil la Locke; Edith Joyce, Mr. L. H. ? Gordon, a dialogue by Joyce brothers, and songs by Messrs. Dowle and ' Merrick. Al together the rceitntions' by the little ones were well rendered, and the singing was much appreciated. These meetings nre always looked forward to by the residents, who gather together to spend a pleasant, evening in the little ' village.' '

SERIOUS ACCIDENT. -. A*. 'YOUNG man named Arthur Stevenson hnd' a narrow escape from a terrible and inslaiitaneous death at Messrs. A. and II. Ellis and Co.'s sawniills, Bellinger Heads, on Tuesday morning .'last. ' As it was he was badly injured, and was still in a bad state yesterday. Stevenson was putting logs into position at the mill, when by sonic means his . head'got jammed between two of the very large; logs, tvnen nc was rounti, some minutes later, ho was badly injured. Tlio logs, however,' had1 fortunately caught the upper part of the head; hail they caught him lower down he must have been killed on tho-spot. Stevenson bled a little, and his head swelled considerably. Dr. Kelly, who happened to beat Bellingen, was sent for, and lie at 'once went to the sufferer and relieved iiira considerably. A BENEFIT CONCERT; Ox Friday evening, September 2, in Moody's hall, Bellingen, a grand complimen tary benefit concert will be tendered to Mrs. Patterson, widow of the late Rev. N. E. Patterson,' who was once in charge of the Bellingen Presbyterian circuit. Manjr of the best vocalisls from the Nambucca and Orara will take paft and as it will be in some cases their first appearance in Bellingen, the concert promises to be interesting and of a high-class nature. It will be remembered that the Rev. N.'B. Patterson was killed by a'fall from his horse near Cooina about three years ago, leaving his wife and child almost unprovided for. Since then Mrs. Patterson, who was popular here as a highly-esteemed lady.i has not been very fortunate in her struggle with the world, nnd we feci sure the concert tendered her Will be well patronised.
