THE DRY CREEK DIGGINGS. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 24 June 1870

THE DRY COREEK DIGGINGS. ,:,The mining at present being carried on.at Dry Creek seems likely, to be remunerative to those who are engaged in it. Going up a the creek, and on the right:lland side, indi a cations are visible that the ground has been , thoroughly worked-in fact, in many places giving way, and very recently a fowl house 1 belonging to some Chinese actually disap. peared one night. All along the creek on Y both sides may be seen tunnels that have been f made by different parties of miners varying a from 50 feet to 400 feet. .The digging is now chiedy confined to that side of the creek on which is situated the store of Messrs Pem. r berton ad 'Co, who are the persons most largely interested in developing mining in I this locality. The extent of races con structed by this firm is almost 22 miles, the water all being brought from Brankeet Creek. This firm has also made some seven or eight reservoirs of about 10 feet deep, each one alone of which holds 750,000 gallons. At th...

Sometimes they are a benefit, while at otheis they are 'productive of impo. itidn and evil. Free trade cannot invariably be commended, any more than universal pro tectoadIcan be always defended. No class en gaged trade have been hitherto more ardent supporters of the " free" principle than those ,epgaed in banking; yet, while professing the principles of free trade, they, by 'a combina ti?n among themselves, were really Proteo tioausta -because they combined together to raise or lower the rates of interest, according as it suited- them, having regard to the state of the money market for the time being. But the combination is broken .up, and money is now, like water, free to find its own level.
