SPORTING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 13 June 1882

SPORTING NOTES. (Br ARCHIMEDES.) Those who are desirous of initiating a winter race meeting should take action at once, as the committee of the Bairns dale Racing Club have decided not to undertake such a meeting themselves, but to lend their countenance to any committee who may be appointed to take the initiative. There can be no doubt but that a good afternoon's sport can be enjoyed by all here if proper steps are taken, for with a little energy thrown into the movement a neat little pro gramme could easily be framed. At request of a number of the advocates of such a meeting Mr. Howard Stoney has convened a meeting to be held at Ro berts' Commercial Hotel on Thursday evening at eight o'clock, to form a com mittee to carry out the winter meeting. 1 am glad that Mr. Alex. Smith obtained such a capitol average for his annual draft of thoroughbreds sold last week. It shows that the Gippsland horses are yearly getting into greater favor in the metropolis. Over £46 per head is a fine av...

PRINTING FOR LOCAL BODIES. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 13 June 1882

It has always boa t a Bravo rltllplailt on that part oL f cnunltrv districts that that It is doublyl crr\rol whom 111 I tt alrttnr'1a of shires or boroughs assist in this work, and hence we can perfectly understand that our Sale contemporaries are severe on the town clerk, Mr. Geoghegan, for ignoring the local printing offices and oending to Melbourne for work to be lone. This matter leaked out at the last council meeting, when, in answer to a question, the town clerk stated that le had secured the printing of rate notices in Melbourne, because the local offices could not do them. This state msent is naturally indignantly denied by all the Sale printers, and we can quite understand their disgust at such a libel being levied aga;nst the efficiency of their establishments. The following remarks from the 3fercury we think can be taken as the true facts of the case, for we have no doubt but that iujuries and injustices are too frequently done by the multiplicity of offices :--It will be...

OUR TAMBO CROSSING LETTER. Saturday, June 10. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 13 June 1882

OUR T.?IBO CROSSING GE' TER. (FROM OUR OWN CURRESPONDENT.) " arurdav June 10. I am glad to see you ndae suu sozre correspondents on the Tambo Valley. I can endorse their remarks, but have little to add to them. I believe that between Mr. Newport's boarding house and Mr. Duncan M'Dougall's store, all engaged on the works can be well sup plied, while the adjustment of the rate of wages satisfies all parties. There has been a little broken time lately, owing to the wet weather, but now that it is fine again, work is going on at a brisk rate. I believe there are still vacancies for good men on both Messrs. White's and Mills and Sandy's contracts, as they are anxious to push the work on as fast as possible. 1 expect shortly to hear of tenders being called for the remaining two miles of the road to the Tambo Crossing which will have to be completed before the road can be used for regular traffic. Afterwards will come the consideration of its continuance to Omeo. the rains we have had have...

Latest Intelligence. MELBOURNE, Monday Evening. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 13 June 1882

Latest Intelligence. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGoAPH ] (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) MELBOURNE, Monday Evening. Complaints are made respecting the weakness and inefficiency of the police force. There is a great necessity fori ai addition of officers and men. The excise officers continue to pro-. secute publicans for selling colonial spirits as imported articles, and for sell ing gin as schnapps. Mr. Bent has ordered..the contract for the Coburg railway to be stopped for 30 days to afford the Cabinet an oppor tunity of deciding whether or not devia tion shall be made so as to'avoid taking the line through the Royal Park. At the inquest this morning, on the body of a female infant found on the wharf, a verdict of wilful murder against some person unknown was returned. A woman, named Ann Kulk, was dangerously injured on Sunday night by a woman'named Louisa Manull, who re sided with her at Collingwood, by strik ing her on the head with a tomahawk during a quarrel. SHOOTING WITH INTENT. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 15 June 1882

HIOOTING WITHL INTENT. News has been received by Sergeant Goodenough to the effect that a family feud between members of a family at Genoa, near Bendoc, has culminated in one of the brothers being arrested on a charge of shooting at another with intent to murder. It would appear that some time ago a man named Alexander died, leaving three sons, James, Robert and John, between whom ever since there has been a standing dispute re lative to the property. Early lost week, James Alexander went to serve a writ on his brother Robert, who refused to take it, and the writ was flung on the ground at his feet. Robert then ran at lhis brother James with a stockwhip, but the latter having a loaded gun, lifted the weapon and fired at Robert, but fortunately did not hit him. James was afterwards arrested on a charge of shoot ing at Robert Alexander with intent to murder him, and was taken before the Bendoc bench on Saturday, when the case was remanded till Monday, bail being allowed. It is not yet...

OUR OMEO LETTER. Monday, June 12. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 15 June 1882

OUR OMEO LETTER: (FRON OUR OWN CORRESPONDEn T.) Monday, June 12. A very old resident, Mrs. B. Higgins, died to-day at her residence, Omeo Plains. Mrs. Higgins has beeni.for some time ailing, and it is said that dis appointment as to the late decision of the celebrated Buckley will case, from which deceased had large expectations, hastened her death. I understand the funeral takes place on Wednesday. ,The Rev. Father O'Donoghue is now on a visit to this district, and has lately been very busy with the young of his denomination. I believe it was a sick call from the late Mrs. Higgins that induced. the rev. gentleman to come. The reefs are still looking well, and several new finds are reported. Mr. H. Bostock, the discoverer of the Prospect ing Association's claim, has found an other rich reef west- of Witten's pro specting claim. This shows gold very freely, and is about three feet wide. O'Mara and Harrington have ::struck rich quartz containing nuggets as large as small peas. Altoget...
