THE FIRST MAN. NEW LIGHT ON THE FALL. [Newspaper Article] — Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1914

■ *' THE FIRST MAN. •NEW LIGHT ON THE FALL. ' Officials of the University Museum at Philadelphia, according to an In dependent cable this week, confirm the reports describing a new version of the Flood and the Fall of Man, as translated from an ancient Sumer ian tablet by Dr. Stephen Langdon, professor of Assyriology at Jesus Col lege, Oxford. The tablet is part of a collection un earthed by the University's expedition to Nippur, and the inscription was copied by Dr. Langdon when he visit ed this city last autumn. On compar ing the tablet which he translated with a Bimilar fragment translated by Dr. Proebel, the authorities found that the two tablets were evidently writ ten by the same person, about 2500 B.C., or 400 yearB before the time of Abraham. It is believed that the fragments are parts of two separate tablets, which, with others, formed a treatise, or hymn of praise, giving an account of the . beginning of the . world. They tell of the Flood, and use the Sumerian equivalent ...

"A FEW YEARS AGO." THE MAN WE WISHED DEAD. LOUIS BOTHA—AS SOLDIER. [Newspaper Article] — Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1914

" \ • "A PEW YEABS AGO." i THE MAN WE WISHED DEAD. LOUIS BOTHA—AS SOLDIER. The rare qualities of judgment and courage shown by -.General Botha in the various stages of . the Boer War are - recounted in the "Pall Mall" Magazine.1 When the Boers, first-took the offensive, Botha's name was un known to the world, but as "Lines man" ..says:— New stars' are discovered, in the heavens often .by accident, often by their influence upon visible bodies whilst they themselves are yet' be low the horizon. By both these means we early fighters in Natal, in the autumn days of 1899, w^re able to forecast some powerful' agent at work below the dull sky of the Boer " strategy, an agent which . bade fair at times to gather the scattered luminaries of small successes into one baleful glare which would hare utter ly put out the flickering British cause. Prisoners taken in the very bosom of the colony averred that, had one man but had his way, Joubert's great . - raid, instead of stopping timorously on t...

CORRESPONDENCE. RURAL WORKERS' LOG. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1914

CORRESPONDENCE. [We wish it to be distinctly understood that we do not necessarily approve of the opinions expressed by correspondents in this column.] RURAL WORKERS' LOG. TO THE EDITOR. Sm,—The above law is to be brought into force next October—according to ' " The Argus" (25/7/14). Farm labourers, milkers, &c., are to tret their 39s per week and found, or 54s without. This will be the final blow to farmers, I think, and a grand harvest for auctioneers and farm salesmen—and an exodus all round from our most beautiful Australia. As far as I am aware, there is no farmer who can afford to, or would, give these wages. What about our fine weather ■and long days—when every hour is a boon to improve our holdings ? Will the. farmers stop all their work at such an hour, or bo willing to pay for overtime? My honest opinion is that there is not one man in our Commonwealth Parliament who has ever had to work like a pioneer Gippslander, conse quently they are not competent to know the r...

YOO SHODLD BE DETERMINED in rejecting the worthless and frequently in jurious counterfeits -which are sometimes pushed for the sake of greater gain as "just as good" as the GENUINE SANDER AND SONS' PURE VOLATILE EUCALYPTI EXTRACT. The preparation of SANDER'S EXTRACT j from the pure selected leaves, and the refinement by special processes give it curative virtues peculiarly its own. There fore, be not misled! Dpmand and insist upon the GENUINE SANDER EXTRACT, ! and you will derive the benefit that thousands have derived from it before. When ill you should not depress yourself more by the common, bulky and nauseating eucalyptus oils and so-called extracts. TANGIL SOUTH TENNIS COURT. (TO THE EDITOR). [Newspaper Article] — Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1914

TANG1L SOUTH TENNIS COURT. (to the kditor). Sin,—I think it is too, bad of the . Tan^fii South correspondent to criticise •7-itbe iadiesV. chopping. He should 're • member tliey did their best, if it clid take three of them to cut a limb (3in. in diameter) through ; and he might shape worse at cooking a dinner. There are things it is considered the Tangil South ladies can do —judging by appearances at lunch-time. How ever, Palmam qui meruit ferat. The ladies did nothing but build a fire to keep themselves warm and provide re freshments, but great credit is due to our gentlemen, who worked so hard, more especially the President (Mr Fechner) and vice-president (Mr Bohn holtzer. They were always to the fore —first there, and last to leave. We must all own that we owe our tennis court to them, for being so consistent at the work. Yours, etc.. ONE OF THE LADIES. "QUEEN OF THE MOVIES." CLEVER ACTRESS WHO IS NEVER HEARD. KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD. [Newspaper Article] — Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1914

"QUEEN OF THE MOVIES." CLEVER ACTRESS WHO IS NEVER HEARD. x. KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD. There is in Italy—tliere is in ^England—there is in France, Ger *many, Russia, Turkey—in fact, every European country—and there very shortly will be in Victoria—a great and lamous actress whose voice has never been heard by any audience, j ihough she has perhaps played before a bigger crowd in the aggregate than any other theatrical figure, living or dead. This is Sighora Gonzales-Terri Bili, the star actress of the Cines Film Company (Italy), who is the Cleopa tra ot the splendid Italian film, "An tony and Cleopatra." It is to have its arst public screening in Melbourne next weelc. The remarkable fact concerning Signora Terribili is not that her voice should, not be audible when a film is being shown; for that, of course, is common to all picture artists. She Is unusual in the fact that never at any time has she appeared in spoken drama in public. The film firms of the world employ many artists w...

LADIES' LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1914

LADIES'* LETTER. From "Irene" in Melbourne. Miss Eadith Walker's offer of her place, "Yaralla," at Concord, in Syd ney, as'a home for the new Governor General, was a bomb in the social camp. Unlike the suffragists' bombs, ! this one was packed with love of country—Scotch country—and when it burst everyone wa's filled with ad miration and curiosity. There was a general rush to find out more about the lady. Because Miss Walker has been for twenty years or so in the public > eye as a millionairess, the rising genera tion has an idea that she is on the shady side of time. Well, she is not. She is at high noon—just fifty years on one hundred. Miss Walker's kim. ness to young girls in society, who have little means, has for .long been a matter of admiring comment' A | trip to England for such is a quite usual gift. I do not know if plainness shuts a girl out from such generosity as a jaunt in Europe, but it is a fact j that the girls who are known to have | gone as Miss Walker's guests...
