POSTAL SURPLUS [Newspaper Article] — Kiama Independent — 6 August 1947

POSTAL SURPLUS 3 The Postmaster General, Senator Cameron. hais again been appealed to by. the Postal Reform League to re ,duce the iniquitous surcharge of 150 per cent on postal matter. The revenue for, the year just end ed was just under £30 million, which is the highest ever recorded. It is almost one ahid, a half million pounds. higher than the previous record year. ,The Chairman of the League points out that the League is advised that the Government will not be able to spend the swollen surplus on postal amenities, because of the. shortage of men and materials. 1"e urges that there should be an immediate reduction{ iln air mail charges, and the .d "temporary" war time surcharge should be reduced, and telephone rental charges should be abolished. BATTERY CHARGING [Newspaper Article] — Kiama Independent — 6 August 1947

BATTERY - CHARGING .Motorists should welcome the an nouncement that Kiama Motor Works Pty Ltd. have installed a.spec ially designed electrical unit for the fast charging of batteries:. The motorist with the flat or'weak bat tery can leave his car at their Ser vice Station, go to lunch. or trans act some business locally,, and upon his ireturn in an hour's time find the battery fully charged and ready for further service (provided of course, the battery is not otherwise defec tive). Under the old system, a quick charge was not advisable, but motor ists have nothing to fear from this new and improved re-charging meth od, which has been well received in America and is encouraged by the battery manufacturers. The fast charger operator sets the commenc ing charge rate, but does not again touch the controls. Each battery governs its own charging rate and the charger switches over automat ically whor the battery Is charged. The iproco~ss Is thus entirely auto matic,

ROUND ABOUT [Newspaper Article] — Kiama Independent — 6 August 1947

ROUNDABOUT BY "THE MAN IN THE STREET" Quite , a heap of football enthus iasts have asked me to see what, can be done regarding the weekly pub lication of points iri the competition. Supporters and players alike ap preciate frequent refei'ence as to the position of their favorite teams and can keep more deeply interested in the figictuations that arise from. time to time. The battle for the final four positions is.now on and interest naturally is greater than earlier in, the season. The S.C.R.F.L. might oblige with an official competition table each week (Of course they will, says Athol Noble-thanks very much). Speaking of competition points Roland Hardy, assistant Secretary of the Kiama District Tennis Associa tion has supplied me with the pro gressive details of the ,Tennis; com petition now well under way: The figures given below do not. include last Saturday's results in the Mixed coinpetition. It will also be noted that quite a few' deferred matches have yet to be played, partic...
