THE AFRICAN SQUADRON. [Newspaper Article] — Bathurst Free Press — 17 August 1850

THE AFRICAN SQUADRON.' (Weekly Chronicle.) .' The opponents of our blockade of the west ern coast of Africa have made out a plausible case for the removal of the squad ron. It is undeniable that for the Ia9t thirty years we have incurred a heavy pe cuniary expenditure, and lost many of our . gallant sailors ; that now we maintain a force amounting to something near a fourth of the British navy, at a cost of half a million ?yearly, on the African coast ; and that all this expenditure of life and treasure has not succeeded in extinguishing the accursed -traffic in slaves, carried on by Spanish, Portuguese, or Brazilian savages. Nay, more, it appears; from the, most authentic -information that the number of the negro population deported from Africa for Brazil ? -«nd Cuba has gone on increasing with the -demand, notwithstanding all our preventive ?measures, and it is alleged that our inter ference, by changing a regulated commerce Into a system of desperate contraband, has added materia...

ENTERTAINMENT TO VISCOUNT GOUGH. [Newspaper Article] — Bathurst Free Press — 17 August 1850

ENTERTAINMENT TO VISCOUNT GOUGH. (From the Weekly Chronicle.) The gallant veteran, General Lord Gough, was sumptuously entertained by the mem bers of the United Service Club, on Wed nesday last, in celebration of his return from the Ka9t. The banquet was served in the grand saloon, on the ground floor, which was so arranged as to form one su perb dining room, capable of affording seats for upwards of 200 guests. This extent of accommodation was rendered absolutely ne cessary from the very large number of mem bers of the club dusirou3 of testifying their respect for the noble and gall tnt Viscouut by being present at the entertainment. Among the earliest arrivals were the Duke of Wellington, Viscount Hardinge, Sir Charles Malcolm, the Earl of Strafford, Lord Frederick Fitzclarence, and the Earl of' Iloden.
