CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. [Newspaper Article] — The Moreton Bay Courier — 11 March 1848

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. }* The Suid African of 27th November contains melancholy news from the frontiers. Five officers have perished by the hands of the Kaffirs : Capt. W. L. Y. Baker, Lieut. Faut and Ensign Burnop, of the 73rd Regiment, Dr. N. S. Campbell, sur- geon of that corps, anil Assistant Surgeon Loch of the 7th Dragoon Guards, It appears that they were.tempted to leave the General's camp at Kornga to visit a conspicuous rock or mountain remarka- ble for its isolated character, its attitude and its table summit, commanding one of the finest and most extensive views in South Africa. The distance from the camp was about seven miles. Their cu- riosity was much excited by the description of this scenery in the camp, and they resolved to judge for themselves. Shortly after their departure they were overtaken by a iieavy shower of rain, which decided Lieut. Littlehalcs, of the 73rd Regiment, who was indisposed, to return, and thus escape the dreadful fate that awaited his companions. ...

LATEST INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Moreton Bay Courier — 11 March 1848

LATEST INTELLIGENCE. By the .arrival of the Secret yesterday afternoon we have been put in possession of Sydney papers to the 4th instant. We can only make room for the following items of news. His Excellency the Governor returned to Sydney from his southern tour -on the 29th ultimo, very much improved in health by his trip. > An extensive rbhbery of silver plate had taken place at the« Australian Club House. Tiie value of the property stolen is about' £200. We learn by the accounts of correspon- dents in the Sydney papers, that, the' natives had been committing serious out- rages on the Manning River, and had caused Messrs. Fenwick to abandon their station after having lost many head ef cattle. The blacks in that district ap- pear to be well acquainted .with the use of fire arms, with which they are well sup- plied. At one station they took away every nail they could find, with the in- tention of cutting them up into shot with their tomahawks. It was feared that many of the sett...

MR. UNDER-SECRETARY STEPHEN. (From the Daily News) [Newspaper Article] — The Moreton Bay Courier — 11 March 1848

MR. ÜNDER-SECRETARY STEPHEN. ("From the Daily News J Mr. James Stephen has at last resigned the office of Under-Secretary of' the Colonial Department, and by his resignation has terminated a career of great misfortune to the public, and of sad injustice to a large number of unfortunate persons who have served the Crown under that department during his tenure of office. He has certainly re- tired as gracefully as circumstances would permit. He has been saved the mortification of yielding 'to the storm of indignation and popular reprobation, which so frequently raged around him; and has had his reputation protected, as far.as protection could be given to it, by a summons to a. seat ia her Majesty's Privy Council. Henceforward he is the Right Honorable James Stephen ; but henceforwaid he is no longer Under-Secretary for the Colonies. The empty honour is his j the real gain is to the public. We have nodesiie to do injustice to the right honorable gentleman. Mr. Stephen is undoubt- edly ...

DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Moreton Bay Courier — 11 March 1848

DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE. Matrimonial Squabbles.-South Brisbane has long been notorious for ' the violence and frequency of matrimonial squabbles, scarcely a day or a night passing .without an exhibition, as disgraceful to the parties immediately interested as it is annoying to the respectable portion of the inhabitants, occurring to disturb the peace of the town.,. On Wednesday evening last, we are in- formed, there were two rows of this kind between parties residing a few doors of each other, which set the whole place in a,n ,uproar. One woman, who is â reproach to her sex,, forgetful of all sense of decency and'feminine decorum, indulged in language which would have disgraced the lowest inmates of St. Giles,; and the effect was increased by her howling in order to excite the dogs to-join in the din and uproar, in which she was eminently successful. The other atliiir was a light between a man and his wife, whose names we suppress for the present, in the hope that the publicity giveh ...

WIDE BAT. *. To the Editor of the Moreton Bay Courier. Sir, -Will you oblige me by inserting in your columns the enclosed letter which I have just re- ceived from Mr. George Furber, of Boui, River Mary, Wide Bay. It will serve to dispensóme doubts that have been entertained as to Hie safety of the bar at that entrance, and the security of the Bay as a harbour. The owner of the Sisters referred to is Mr. Korlï, the well-known ship- builder, and whose qualifications otherwise make him an authority upon which reliance can,be placed in matters of this kind. Captain Flinders marie a perfpct suryey of Hervey's Bay in the Norfolk in 1799,the sound- ings of which are placed on his chart of the voyage in the Investigator a few years afterwards, which shew its/.'asy and safe navigation. r , I am.
