Kosher Butchery Company. To the Editor of the "Hebrew Standard." [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 February 1898

Kosher Butchery Company. To the Editor of the ' Hebrew Standard.' Sir, — When I addressed you on the above subject, as per Standard of January 21st, I felt assured I had made myself at the outset perfectly explicit that no man not suffering from either those deplorable affections — disordered stomach or hystercial blues—. could possibly in his sane senses misunderstand my absolutely disinterested and friendly intentions, and my English of their explanation, much less so vituper atively distort, twist, and mistake the words I used, as Mr. T. L. Dolowitclv has seen fit and Drooer to do in frothy, vindictive, and illogical effusion, peroration, or whatever agglomeration of words other than a letter he may imagine he has strung together for the purpose of crushing poor -)^Q en the one hand, and on the other, with the time subtle charm of the snake to the bird, the spider to the fly, trying ' to draw the sheep skin off the wolf,' as published in to-day's Standard^ I am not ashamed of my ...

Bismarck of Jewish Descent [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 February 1898

Bismarck of Jewish Descent Few people are aware that Prince Bismarck is of Hebrew decent. He derives his Jewish blood from his mother, whose father — Anastasius Menken, one of the favorite bureaucrats of Frederick the Great — was of Hebrew parentage Although of late.it has evidently! appeared politic to the Prince to coun tenance the anti-Semitic movement both in Germany and Austria, yet while in office he invariably showed himself a good friend to the Jewish nation, and chose the Hebrew banker, at Berlin, Baron VonBleichroeder, as his most trusted confident. Indeed, in those days he was so well disposed toward the Jews that he even discussed the advisability ofj marrying his sons to Jewesses, on the ground that it would bring money into the family again, and likewise (: improve both morally and physically the Bismark breed. On the 16th. inst, a special service was held in the Synagogue o£ the Adass Yisroel (Orthodox) Congregation, Berlin, for the purpose of administering the oath t...

Restoration of the Jews. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 February 1898

Restoration of ^the Jews. Have we any signs presenting themselves of the literal fulfilment of the prophecies respecting Israel's restoration to the Promised Land ? We have. For one thing, it must be noted that its process will be a gradual one. The restoration from Babylon which had; been predicted was of this nature. Let us, then, notice what history records, and observe some of the signs of the times. It is an historical fact that a great change for the better has come upon the Jews during the past century. To a great extent they have became emancipated from, the 'yoke of the Gentiles.' In England they were enfranchised in 1753. In France the yoke fell off a. little later. In Austria a liberating edict was pro claimed in 1783. In Prussia oppressive laws were repealed in 1787. In Russia the edict which excluded. Jews from the country was revoked in 1805. Other countries in time followed these examples. The grasping Turk gave them toleration and liberty to possess land in Palestine...

THE STUDY OF HEBREW. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 February 1898

THE STUDY OF HEBREW. By Israel Abrahams. Some Jews think it a waste of time to learn Hebrew ; they say that the English Bible is good enough, and that as for saying prayers, they would sooner say them in English than in Hebrew. Now, I wonder if you have ever seen an instrument called a phonograph ? It was invented by Edison, and if anyone speaks into the mouth of the phonograph and you afterward turn on a handle, all the words which were spoken into the instrument are spoken out again by it. Its tone is not unlike the original voice, but still it has a hollow, metallic unnatural sound. Now the Jews who prefer the Bible in English are like people who would sooner hear the phonograph speak than the real voice of the living person. But would you not rather hear your own father's voice than any imitation, however clever? Well, the Hebrew Bible is the real voice of our Father in Heaven, or, at least it is the voice of His inspired messengers. No, you cannot be -satisfied with the Bible i...
