PUBLIC MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 5 February 1876

PUBLIC MEETING. A. meeting ~ was lield iii" the Town Hall on Monday last for the purpose of taking the necessary-stepa to obtain an alteration in the present arrangements : connected with the Western District Court; and also to endeavour to procuretheextension of the sittings of the Supreme <?oiirfc to Roma. . T^he meeting was well and influentially at tefid^'ill the principal inhabitants of the town bemg present; ; Mr.^ poxTEi. was voted into the chair, And' read the advertisement convening the meeting. He considered that the interval of six months that existed between the Sittings of the District Court in October and that Of April, was most detrimental to the interests of the district; Those who were unfortunate enough to have cases in that Court—and any of those present might be in that position at some time or other—felt the inconvenience of six months delay before their actions were settled. There should certainly be "four sittings of the District Court in Roma, as t...

BRISBANE. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 12 February 1876

BRISBANE. [from: OTJB, OW2L COREESrOKDEtfT. j The dread fourth of the month has passed over, and the result is a lot of dishonoured paper, great talk of compositions, assignments and insolvencies. I was told to-day that there were about twenty business houses iikely to go, some here, and others up north and inland. The direct cause is attributed to undue ,and needless pressure by two of the banks, but the real one is over-trading, though it is believed by most people that this is only temporary, and that really commerce here is sound. In the one article of tea alone I hear that there is a sufficient supply here to last the whole colony for two or three years to come, and that bills for two and three thousand (given in payment <?f tea purchases) are in circulation with names to them that their owners could with difficulty raise a hundred on under ordinary circumstances. The Queensland National. Bank is, I believe, reaping the benefit of the pressure of the two financial in...

THE ENGLISH MAIL. GENERAL SUMMARY. (From the Home News, December 10.) [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 12 February 1876

TDKE ENGLISH MAIL. GENERAL SUMMARY '(Prom the Itome Jfews, December iO.) The eliief domestic events of the past week] have been more or less tragical in their interest. I After the weather our talk liasbeeft of accidents'! both by sea and sliortx We have experienced; within the range of a few days almost ail the vicissitudes of which our English climate is capable. If we have not passed from the ex treme of hyperboreal- cold to the' extreme of tropical lieat, we have gone through the gamut of atmospheric variations from intense frost and. deep snow to thaw and rain and slush, while now it seems as if we might expect at any mo ment frost. England-is not alone in the havoc and the discomfort which the weather has brought with it. In tho south of Prance at the beginning of the week railway traffic was entirely suspended, and the peasantry of j Provence are threatened with famine. In Rome there has been the severest overflow of the Tiber; known since 1870. But the Vatican has not as yet...

SURAT. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 12 February 1876

- SURAT. ISlUiM OUK OWN C02RESP0N1)ENT. 1 A case under the Small Debts Act—Duncan v. Stringfello w—was heard here on Tuesday last, which disclosed i&ture3~Ihter^isg-Jto :jneH~ working on the public works of the colony. The complainant alleges that lie had been en gaged by the defendant, who is foreman of works at the Sura* Bridge, to draw in from Bfucedale sixty-six logs at the rate of two shill ings and sixpence the running foot, and that when ready to start on the job he told the defendant, who denied having made the agree-. ment, and said he would not have the work done; hence the action which was for £30, for loss sustained from defendant's breach of con tract. Defendant demurred to the jurisdiction of the OoUrt, stating that complainant should hare moved under Action against Government, Act, and the complainant was, very properly, n&n-suited. It is patent that Mr. Strmgfellow, acting for the Government, could sot be liable in his individual capacity* and means, ...
