SPORTING. FOOTBALL. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 May 1909

SoPORTING, FOOTBALL. Owing to the want of energetic sup porters of football last year, the teams engaged in the Alexandra District Com petition, were obliged to 'contribute £2 towards the competition, the winning team taking the lot. This year, however, an enthusiastic all-round sportsman has come to reside in our midst in the person of Mr C. A. Wales, proprietor of the Corner Hotel. This gentleman has generously offered a silver cup for com petition amongst the football clubs of the district. We understood that Thornton, Yarck and Johnson's Creek have fairly strong teams, and there is no'reason why Alexandra should not be able to do likewise. The delegates of the clubs should meet as soon as possible, and make the necessary arrangements for the formation of the association.

i4xantdra & qa Standayd NEO TEMERE N&EC TIMIIDE PUBLiSFHED EVERY FRItDAY.: -FRIDAY, MAY 14, 1909. TIIw: report issued by the ConserVatbr. of Forests for Victoria is of interest to the community, showing as it loes tihe state of affairs in relation to our forests: Much has been done in the way of pre venting illegal cutting and pilfering of timber, but very little in the way of planting new timber, although the report as.,ures us that enclosures for the growth of pine and hardwood are being gradually extended. In various parts of the State areas have been pre pared and allotted for the planting of different timbers, so that it is manifest that the authorities are at last awaking to their responsibilities in this most important direction. It does not follow, however, that many good tim ber areas should not be judiciously exploited, for the timber industry is one of the most important ones of Australia, and the cutting of suitable timber now but clears the way for the m...
