Only 42 Letters m tiaw Chinese Alphabet. T* China is to have a brand ne\v al phabet. As the present Chinese alphabet consists of 8,000 charac ters, the change is going to be one of the most remarkable in the his tory of letters, for tho new alpha bet will contain only forty-two characters. ' Hitherto the unfortunate Chineso children have been forced to memo rise at least eight thousand ideo* grams or characters. "Hierogly phics," we generally cull them, tho queer little quirks and quirleques. The students cannot begin to learn anything, to understand anything, or communicate even In the simplest manner until they have memorised a whole Jot of these eight thousand ideograms'. Then they begin to study in earnest, and have many thousand to learn, for every one of the queer Chinese marks means some sound, some syllable, or some ob ject, and there is a different onq for everything. Revenge is Sweet. A master butcher gave liis salesman a week's notice, and now he wishes he had paid him off at once. A lady came into the shop the day after he received notice of his dis charge and was shown a leg of mut ton. "I'm afraid that is rather too heavy for me," she remarked. - "I think not, mum," replied the man. "You see, the poor animal died of rap id consumption and fever and conse: quently—:—" But the lady had fled, and he re placed the joint with a grin of satis faction. "Sausages, sir? Certainly," he re marked, to another customer. "We have the very best. Ever since the muzzling order has been in force we But he, too, had fled. And with a sweet, revengeful smile the salesman hung them on the hook again and waited for the next. A HORSELESS TOWN. At the doors of Indianapolis there is to be the first truly horseless city in America, and—save, perhaps, for those places where oxen,, goats, cam els, or what not else furnish native and locomotive power—the first horse less city of the world. The actual construction work is well under way, and in two or three years there will be a complete town.
