THE BLOW FLY PEST. [Newspaper Article] — The Tamworth Daily Observer — 11 January 1911

THE BLOW FLY PEST. A Western sheep owner has adopted llic plan 01" dipping the carcases of all skinned rabbits in an arsenic solution—leaving tlicni near tanks and dams so that blow flics would have ready access to them. Ho claims that millions of ilies are killed in this way, and considers it a solution of the blow lly trouble. The solution is composed oC arsenic 2'..{.•lb, soila 71b; and sugar Gib. Add water and boil lor 35 minutes. The preparation should not be inhaled, nor al lowed to get into sores or cuts. It would perhaps be much better if the carcases were burnt, and some other means be taken to serve up the sugar and arsenic lo the Hies—green bushes, for instance, dip ped into the solution should be effective, i£ placed beyond the reach of stock. Cattle and sheep have a habit of nosing around ; rabbit carcases. There is also the danger that lain falling on such carcases would drain into and pollute the nearest .water, supply. . , .. •• —r^r-'w

PROBLEM OF UNEMPLOYMENT. IMPORTANT ADDRESS. SYDNEY, Tuesday Afternoon. [Newspaper Article] — The Tamworth Daily Observer — 11 January 1911

PRGBLEM OF URBMYKEST. IMPORTANT ADDRESS. SYDNEY, Tuesday Afternoon. Professor Ftnvles gave an important ad dress 'before the Science Congress to-day, on the subject of "Poverty and Work." He said that in Australia to-day there was very little unemployment, but on the contrary there was scarcity of labor. Every man should be given a chance of employment, continued Professor Fowles, and a senti mental treatment of Hie unemployed was futile. The time had come for scientific handling of the problem. There was lio cure at nil through those theorists who im agined the land tax or any other one reform would automatically eliminate (he' unem ployed, and these agencies, had been , com pletely discredited to deal effectively with the problem. It must be attacked on three sides with a view to assist temporarily the unemployed, and to dispose the permanent surplus, ;\V so improve the organisation 'of industry so as to prevent unemployment.
