There were no less than 30 flrininals in the band, some of them being old and hardened offenders, and others being young men and women just entering upon a career of crime. The physician and his wife rose, dressed themselves, and welcomed Die invaders with an apparent cordiality which threw thorn off their guard. Plying * Lawyer, Of ticmne this did not happen in Sydney, but it ooouirod fa ft dty bearing a similar name, and likewise eituMed on the most beautiful hflitooorin the world. A young lady was oat late one night, when die met a stalwart miner from the Hodgkinson, who pitying her unprotected state, saw her home. Kow this miner was of a trusting disposition, and carried all his worldly wealth, amounting lo a good round sura, in his pockets. When he awoke in the morning he found that his un protected damsel and his cash had departed. The dctcctives were communicated with, and the girl, whom we will call Nancy Lee, because it is not her name, was promptly run in. There was a difficulty about engaging a lawyer for the defence. She did not care about telling her friends where the had " planted the swag," as she knew they would forthwith appropriate it and leave her to her fate. BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. April 9. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 21 April 1880

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM ODE SPECIAL COBBEBPONDEtfT, Anril 9. J>tjh in the silly season, that is if nil seasons in Brisbane ore not silly. We have just got over the fearful and delirious excitement of an election. Angus Mackay having left for England, a vacancy has been created in South Brisbane. For this seat three com batants entered the lists, Kraserand Hoekings .on the side of free trade, and Dr. Prentice on »he protection and anti-Kanaka ticket. Khmer went in on a good majority, and so far, as I know, there wan little fun and no lighting. Elections &ow-a-days arc not quite the scenes of revelry «sd political lunacy they used to be. We take our politics ?uvea an we do our pleasures-sadly. Now that the Session is so nearly approaching speculation is rife as to the new platform that may be expected; protection is being resuscitated, as t have told you, under the patronage of Meston, better known as the Sacred Ibis. What such a worn out cry can result in save failure nobod...
