Alexandra Times. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY. "Veritas Vincit Omnia." FRIDAY, JULY 16, 1869. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 16 July 1869

PUBLII|IED EVERY TUKAD.LY AND PRIDAY. ý Verltlu Vinclt momls."r FRIDAY. JULY 16, 1869. TIIE leasing of largn areas at Godfrey's Creek has at last been disposed of. The Barker's, Koh-i-noor, and other leases have either been refused or withdrawn, and the ground now has been taken up under indivi dual miner's rights, The delay and suspen sion of work which has necessarily accom panied these altorations has had the effect of creating a temporary dulness at Godfrey's, and most of the business people complain that matters are not so flourishing with them as they have been. P'ossibly, it might have been better for the general present prosperity of the township if some of these leases had been granted, but at the same time,. it must be oonfessed that if the ground turns out as well as it is expected to do, ultinmttely the district will reap much greater advantages by having a local distribution of the wealth that will ere long be obtained from the ground. It cannot be denied that the im po...

WOOD'S POINT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 16 July 1869

WOOD'S POINT. (From our own Correspondent.) The weather .for the last day or two has been very changeable, and from all appear ance we are to have our usual heavy fall of snow, Very seldom have the hills remained uncovered white up to this time of the year.. The present state of the Yarra road is, I am glad. to, see, attracting the attention of the flon.the Minister of Roads and Bridges. Mount Arnold is the worst part, some places. in that locality are looking like a quagmire,. and require. immediate. attention.. The. Jamieson folks. seems to be jealous. of the existence of the- Yarra road.. In a letter written to the. "Jamieson Chronicle"' by a boarder at.the Junction Hotel some severe attacks are made. on Mr Sullivan. for his attention to the Yarra road. The writer. goes on to say " that surely something ought to be spant.on, the Jamieson road, the Yarra. having already, cost so.much." I think that. whoever this. " anonymous scribbler."' is he, could advocate the inter-.sts of his...

DURHAM GULLY, SPRING CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 23 July 1869

,DURHAM GULLY, SPRING CREEK. I(From our own Correspondent.) ;iThe jnew lead mentioned in my last report, is not turning out as well as was expected. Several shafts were bottomed with poor results, but the holders of others are sinking in good spirits, as a little fine gold can be obtained on the false bottoms, but not payable as yet. The whole gully is marked out until it joins the frontage claims on Spring Creek, There are claims pegged out here for a distance of five miles, and only two shafts going down. The old workings are still paying good wages, aid some are stacking their wash-dirt for the puddling machine, which is just put up at the bottom of the gully by Mr'McLeich. I hear thecharge at the machine will be moderate, so this will give the miners a chance. There are a. few claims at work on the line of the Durham reef, which, I may mention, is get getting out some very fair stone at a depth of 60 feet. Just below this reef, a nugget was got last week by Packer and party, wei...

OUT ON A BICYCLE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 23 July 1869

OUT ON A BICYCLE. The battle is not always to tho swift nor tli?:eracp to the strong. So I must say in view, of the late election at Godfrey's. One candidate, who was the darling of the people (1) and .was patted on the head as the good boy who distributed favors of a certain kind gratis, without, of course, the slightest view of the approaching election, was left out in the cold fog. His immacu late d*isinterestedness, pure and un;sordid p iiples, his love for the electors, indivi e dually and collectively, and his deire to 1- manipulate the district funds generally, !n without respect to. persons,' in fact, the ir exalted morality of his whole public career, lb even the not infrequent nobbler were . all e forgotten at the moment' when sensible men were about to 'scratch out of the ballot paper the names of ineligible candidates. Alas I for the falacy of human aspirations. The e poor man who. was .hooted by the posse of a small boys, headed by the terror of the canine species, and ...

GODFREY'S CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 23 July 1869

!GODFREY'S CREEK. ----+-- (From a Correspondent.) There has been some excitement here, since my last report. A few days ago a fatal accident occurred, by which Mr T. O'Calla ghan, manager of the Golden Gate, lost his life. The deceased was engaged in putting up a whim, and by some means the spar booeam became detached, and struck him on the back. From the time of the accident until he d ied-about 21 hours -the poor fellowv's sufferings were very great. He leaves a wife and three or four children. The funeral took pklce on Sunday last, and was very largely attended. On last Sunday morning a young man named Luke O'Brien, was brought in here from S·r?ing Creek, witll the lower jsw broken through receiving a kick from a horse, bought the day before at auction. A Two humane gentlemen went round the town- a ship, and collected as much money as da- d frayed the unfortunate man's expenses to t the Kilmore Hospital. Great praise is due to Dr O'Connor for the attention he paid the sufferer. W...

PUBLISIED EVERY TUESDAY AND FIRDAT. "V erias Vincit Omnlta." FRIDAY, JULY 23, 1860. TisR Victoro-n Miners' Protection League, the Manifesto of which we publish be low, is calculated to become a stronghold for tihe mining population, provided it be pro perly managed, and not converted into a purely political power. Local and General News. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 23 July 1869

It affords us much pleasure in announcing that the machinery. winding and puddling gear for the Working SIiners' Prospecting Claim, at Godfrey's, left J1elhourne on Tues district than all the law we have had lately. Some excellent washdirt has lately been - taken out of the ground, and blocking out will at once commence. Those who, have k invested in this claim will soon reap a good harvest. The jumping previously referred to has been disposed of. A grand amateur performanre taken place at Godfrey's Creek on Monday evening the 26th inst, the proceeds of which will be given in aid of the Alexandra Hlopital building fund. A very attractive prorrar~ne ha ,been issued, and doubtless there will be a large attendance on the occasion. As the liberality of the Godfrey's COeek people is well known, we expect the fund will be considerably aug mented. In addition to. a collection of Negro and other melodies the farce of " A Prince for an Hour" will be performed. A general meeting of the shareh...
