IIOSPITAL PERFaIORMANCES. (7o the Editor of the Standard.) Saa,-As I observe thero is to be a repe tition of the late performanco shortly in aid of tile local hospital, allow me us a regular play-goer to say a few words upon the sub ject; well, then, if you want a good house, why not try a ncew piece with new faces P Surely we have plenty of talent amongst us, and I hear some of the legal gentlemen who will pay us a visit at the County Court would moet willingly lend a hand ; then, I say, dton't let us have tlhe same aflair as the last, which, I am informed, did not pay the ex penses (your kind-hlearted reporter notwith standing) pray goodness don't let us have "Tuacbetlh" torn to rags, but something that will amuse instead, say a little more of " Itichie" and the like.-I am, &e., A.B.

lIqaudýtttca &f ca iauniwda PUIlllSiiH i i EVEr n BATUlllDAI " EXCELMI4III'. SATURDAY. 2'.rti AUGUSI'. No doubt conferences of municipal bodies are occasionally both desirable rand necessary, but it is an essential element in their composition if their conclusions and representations are to possess any weight, that they should be genuinely representative of the bodies on behalf of which they profess to speak. It is questionable, however, ii the so-called shires' conference which lsAembled in Melbourne last week piiseesOed this very necessary qualifica tion, and undoubtedly some of its con, clusions are ini dlaulncrical opposition to public opinion, if not to that prevailing amongst most of the municipal bodies whiol they assumed to represent. One remar?ll ble instance of this is fulrnished by the resolution adopted by the con foronce, in favor of removing the power of the election of local auditors from the ratepayers to the councils-a change which we are convinced would nev...

YEA SHIRE ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 24 August 1878

YEA SHIRE ELECTION. (FROME OUR COIIIIRRESPONDENT.) The election, which was held on Thursday last, passed off much better than was expected. It swas feared,'owing to the disappointment caused on the 8th, through the non-arrival of the ballot papers, that very few of the rate payers would turn up a second time, but on no former occnsion did so many come to the poll. Each candidate felt confident of success, and their friends deserve the highest praise for tile energetic manner in whlich they worked in their respective interests. One enthusiatrio gentleman rode a distance of twenty-two miles to bring up two voters for Mr Taylor, who was occupied the greater portion of the lay by his professional duties. At Yea the numbers polled were-Taylor, 123; Ker, 113 ; I'urcell, 92. At Mnoleswortlh Taylor, 27; Purcell, 10; Ker, 3. On the declaration of the poll by the returning officer, Air Quinlan, ,T.P., the snucessful candidates were lustily cheered. When the eheerinz had partially subsided Mr ...

AGRICULTURAL NOTES. FARM WORK FOR SEPTEMBER. ABRAHAM LINCOLNE'S MONTHLY REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 31 August 1878

AGRICULTURAL NOTES. PARM WORK FOR SEPTEMBER. AnRiuAMr LINCOLNE'S MONTIrLT REPORT. Green Fodder.--Perhaps the best summer fodder is a crop of Maize ; and if the land be well prepared, it will prove the lheavie.t yielder. In preparing the lnnl, cub-soiling and heavily-manurin aore indispensable ; this was never more thoroughly proved than by tihe results of last summer, when the shall w lands yieldled next to notlhine, and very heavy crops were cut off paddocks where good honest tillage had been ndopted. I.as summer tested the system of deep cultivation also with tile mrangold-, chicory, carrots, and all other romt crops. A good dressing of well-rotted stable manure is preferable to any other, but where this is not procurable, any anmoniacal stimulant will do, such as the Superphosphates now in tile market. Msangolds and Sugar-beet. - The main sowing ought to be made this month, and both crops need n similar preparation recom mended for maize. The seed-bed cannot be too richly or fine...

THE SKETCHER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 31 August 1878

THE SKETCHER. The Mormon scandal is one of the most interesting and romantic stories on record. About the time when the middle aged men of to.day were in the nursery, Joseph Smith, the future founder of Mormonism, was beginning to "see visions" and "dream dreams." At the age of 18 an angel appeared to him with the tidings that his sins were forgiven, and that Heaven had selected him as the instrument of communicat ing a new revelation to the world-so he gave it out at the time-and that on a hillside, near Palmyra, in the state of New York, there lay concealed a num bher of mysterious plates, on which one of God's American Prophets-Mormon by name-had engraved a history of the ancient ohurch of the New World, together with an apocalyptic sketch of the Divine purposes down to the full ness of time. This Prophet Mormon died some 14,000 years ago, on. the morrow of an Armageddon, which had been fought between the children of light and the children of darkness of those times; but before h...

MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 31 August 1878

MELBOURNE LETTER. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) There is nothing new in politics pending the division on the second rending of the Government Reform Bill, the discussion on which las now been worn pretty well threadhbare. Of course there is no doubt of the second reading being curried and vwry little of the programme of the Government y being carried out in its entirety, up to the despatch of the special embassy to k England, which has latterly been eml officially alluded to in Parlinment ..a a foregone conclusion. The only doubt is as to whether a general election will be hazarded prior to the trip, but appearances all point to the conclusion that it will not, if by any means it can be evaded. Some little surprise has been occa sioned by the announcement of the early s departure of Sir G. F. Bowen for the Mauritius, to the Government of which he has been appointed, for although it r was known that his term of office had almost expired, it was not thought that he would leave the col...

THE PERFORMANCE IN AID OF THE FUNDS OF THE HOSPITAL (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 31 August 1878

THE PERFORMANCE IN AID OF THE FUNDS OF THE HOSPITAL. (7o the Editor of the Standard.) "From envy, hatred, and all uncharit. ableness, Good Lord, deliver us."-Litany. "Faith, Hope and Charity, and the greatest of these is Charity."-Paul. " Answer not a fool according to his folly, but answer him lest heo be wise in his own conceit."-- Solomon. Sln,-You gave " A.B."a show, lot me have one in reply. In your criticism of the 17th instant, your able critic, a first-class amateur himself, and well calculated to form an opinion, says as follows:-" Air Ramon, however, went through the speech of ' Macbeth' in a really masterly style, proving that he bad well studied the part lie had undertaken." I quite agree with this criticism. In these little up-country villages one does not expect to hear a Kean, a Montgomery, or a Henry Irving. Mr Haines has also been particularly requested to repeat the reading. Surely "A.B." must be some drivelling dotard or some newly-fledged aspirant to histrionic h...
