SGA Elections Provide Equal Representation A desired goal on every college campus is the support of a strong student government which contributes to the student's academic experience. When complaints arise from a particular class, no one is capable of taking it to the student governing body with understandable representation. It is from this point that a governing body must launch an effort to provide equal representation. The people feel satisfied while the government grows with strength and respect. For this reason, the Behrend Campus Student Government Association initiated this year's class officer elections. Each class will elect a President. This student will hold a vital positionas he will be a voting member on S.G.A.. A first and second Vice-President will be elected to represent their respective class on certain committees. Also to be elected from each class will be a Secretary-Treasurer. After the class elections, the officers will draw up a constitution for their ...

Claridge Suggests Plan For New Library Hours Funds for Publications Undergo SGA Discussion Behrend is in the process of becoming a four year college. One of the major facilities needed to help Behrend achieve its goal of a full scholastic institution is an adequate library with necessary h _' ours for study time. Although the adequacy of Behrend's library is questionable as far as the amount of books, periodicals and micro film it contains, the hours it is open to students for study is the main issue at hand. Behrend is not unique in this situation-other commonwealth campuses are having the same problem. The main reason for the cut in hours concerns the decrease m the budget for part-time help-Behrend is evolving into a tour year institution, but without sucn lunds it is unable to keep up with this expansion. Mr. Warner,- head librarian, stated that he is not pleased with the fact that the library had to cut down on the hours it remains open; but he said that holding hours...

Homecoming Weekend Brings New Interest The past weekend offered a great variety of excitement, as well as educational experiences' for the student body of Behrend College. The weekend began on Friday, October 6, with the Pep Rally at 8:30. Despite the onslaught of rain, the enthusiasm of the cheerleaders and the band were not daunted. Both groups were determined to put on a good show and, as anyone who attended will testify, they did. Jan Pawl, together with her hardworking group, did a variety of well rehearsed numbers, along with a number of daring skits. Combining this with Mr. Davis Giersch's exciting renditions of popular tunes, the evening was a fitting prelude to the soccer game with Gannon. The elements were against us again on Saturday, but this did not hinder a superb performance by the Behrend eleven against Gannon. The student support of the game was excellent; many throats were raw at the end of the day. The final score is history, but the final score cannot give ...

Help Keep Behrend Unique Vote For Your It seems as though there is a recurrent theme that is heard from all sources on campus: "Behrend is unique." One hears it so often, that the person begins to wonder just what does make Behrend "unique". One of the key reasons for the uniqueness of Behrend seems to lie in its size. Because Behrend is relatively small, students do have a better opportunity to establish communication between themselves and faculty, as well as administrators. The full benefits of this kind of communication cannot be fully appreciated until a person goes to a larger institution (ask any one who has gone down to main campus and comes back to Behrend). Another plus which is devised from Behrend's small size, is the ability of students to know each other as people, instead of simply faces in the crowd. This capability has a variety of applications; anywhere from social to political. The ability of students to know, and communicate with, a larger number of peopl...

Book Review Marshall McLuhan and Stanley Kubrick By Ed Doklan Culture Is Our Business. By Marshall McLuhan. 366 pages. Ballantine. $3.95. Too often in the rush and rumble of everyday life the American fails to stop, ponder and appreciate the minute details that surround him. Among the neglected are the thousands of advertisements that are regarded as commonplace. The easy omission of this 20th century folk art is one of the most notable sins of our times. Fortunately for art lovers, Marshall McLuhan has found the time to stop and observe advertisements as an art form and an accurate mirror of American environment. Culture Is Our Business views advertising as "a vast entertainment far beyond the scope of anything Hollywood or the networks have ever attempted." McLuhan juggles a reprint of an ad on the right hand page while supplementing the ad with quotes, misquotes and aphorisms on the left. The effect is dynamic. Chapter by chapter, McJLunan touches everything from racial p...

Literary Baby Needs Tender Loving Care A new style of literary magazine was conceived recently, and is expected to be born around the beginning of May. This baby is unique and exciting in more ways than one. First its body will be different from most other literary magazines. Instead of a quiet little book, this baby will actually be an intriguing envelope filled with creative posters. Second, the magazine will get its nourishment (in the form of previously unpublished short stories, poems, and essays ) from both Behrend students and faculty. I could tell you about its color, height, weight, etc., but that would spoil the actual birth for you. Instead, let me tell you what we need to get this baby born without any complications. The literary magazine needs people who are interested in helping to put the magazine together, and it also needs CONTRIBUTORS. Any student or faculty member of Behrend is urged to submit articles, artwork* or photography anytime. In fact, the sooner ...

Local Clean Air Week Initiates Tree Plant-In The Clean Air Committee for the city of Erie is sponsoring a Clean Air Week, October 15-21. Its purpose is to bring to the attention of the citizens of Erie, the threat being created by the pollution of the air we breathe, and what they can do to help alleviate the problem. Starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday October 14, with a tree plant-in at 18th and Holland Streets, the week continues with newspaper articles, television announcements and a flyer distribution at the plazas and supermarkets on Thursday October 19. Through these planned activities, the Committee hopes to show that one does not have to be in industry to be able to do something about air pollution, that everyone, in some way or another, can help do something about the problem. At the present, the Committee still needs volunteers to distribute the flyers at different sites around town, so if anyone is interested in helping, they can call Pat Mertens at 453-3604 from 9 a....
