Tub Wiiisxot Tax.—Commissioner Rollins hrt8 iust issued a circular with reference to the whisk y tax, in which'ho says: By sec* rlon fifty-eight of the ant, of Jul y 20,1808, it is provided that all spirits forfeited to tho United (Hates, sold by ordor of the court ,and any distilled spirits condemned before .tho passage, ot the act and in possession of the Unitea States , shall be subject to tax , and the purchaser shall, immediately, beforo he takes' possession of said spirits, pay the tax thereon; The spirits sold are subject to tax without regard to tbe /question whether or not the tax . ha8 been previously paid thereon. The tax to be paid ia fifty cents per wine gallon when below proof, and per proof gallon when above; proof. ' The special tax of four dollars per barrel imposed upon distillers for each barrel in excess of one hundred barrels produced by them is not applicable; nor is the tax of like amount imposed upon spirits in bonded warehouses at, the time of the pass...
