INDIANAPOLIS. OCTOBER 10, 1S46. The State Debt. The N. Y. Journal of Commerce of Oct. 1, has the following paragraph on this important subject 1 Indiana. Debt. We Icara that the letters by the Great Western in reference to the negotiation now going on in London for tho adjustment of the Sute debt of Indiana, under the law of last winter, are favorable to the success of the arrangement. We have not ourselves seen the letters, but give the information as it is communicated to us from a respectable source. It may be proper, however, to say, that we saw letters a month or two since, from two of the London bondholders, from which we inferred that they would require some modification of the law, before yielding to its conditions. Time will show which version is right. Curiosities. We hare on hand a real genuine Mexican Spür, which can be seen at our office. It was sent to this place by a son of S. W. Norrie, Esq., from Texas. It is said to have been taken from the heel of a dead Mexican, ...

INDIANAPOLIS. OCTOUEIl IT, 1S4C. TIic Madison Banner Meanness. Falsehood and deception are the especial attributes of a large class of Whig Editors; but if we seek fur knavish meanness in union with the other vilencsse?, to a superlative degree, we have only to regard the course of 6ome exulic advocates of the very policy which perhaps made them fugilites from their place of nativity. A foreigner who opposes the doctrines of democracy, the very doctrines through whose grace he has found an asylum from the oppressions of the old world, is tea times as bitter, malignant and unprincipled as the American advocate of the same doctrines. One reason perhaps is, that generally the native whi g is impressed to some extent with the real truths of re publicanism ; while the foreigner who, as a citizen of this country, adheres to aristocratic dogmas, does so from the strongest unbelief in the capacities or the people, and from a sort of superstitious and fanatical veneration for aristocratic fo...

INDIANAPOLIS. O CTO II El t 24. 1S4G. Modern Tories. Since the Mexican war is thus far successful to American prowess, and the lories have not opportunity to exult over the defeat of our own armies, they complain, on the other hand that the war ia not conducted vigorously enough by our Government. If there is the least reason for such a charge, it grows out of a too close adherence to the policy early indi cated by the Whig leaders in the United States Sen ate. Every reader of Congressional debates will remember the graphic manner in which Mr. Cbittex des proposed that we should " strike a blow with one hand, while holding out the olive branch with the ether," Sec. &c.t as well as the speech of Mr. Webster, advocating the same policy, and from which wc take the following extracts : " The President, by two messages one of ihe 13th of May and the other of the 10th of June, signifies that he is ready to treat with Mexico upon terms of peace ; c.iue 11 appears, at least as J...
