The Campus Police [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 24 March 1960

The Campus Police An interesting sidelight to the recent fire in Annex No . is to be found in the actions of the University Police during the disturbance . Captain Green , the newly-appointed University Chief of Police , helped Mask and Bauble members to evacuate equipment from their office and equipment room and far enough away from the building itself to be out of danger from the fire , then had some of his men detailed to guard the equipment . After the building was declared safe members of the Police Department again helped M&E members with their equipment , this time to bring it back into the building . All this went on while other Campus Police personnel were efficiently helping to control the crowd which had turned out to watch the short-lived spectacle . These actions were , of course , of great help to the Mask and Bauble , but they seem to us to be more interesting as one of the ways in which the Campus Police have built up a fund of good will on the part of th...

Integration : Propaganda or Justice in Charity ? by Tom Martin During the course of the question-answer period following Senator Symington s speech last week in Copley Lounge , the Senator was questioned about the civil rights battle being waged in Congress . He expressed his desire and conviction that the Negro should be accorded those rights which would elevate him from the status of a secondclass citizen . The reason the Senator gave for desiring this was that , in his international travels , particularly in non-Caucasian countries , he had observed and deplored the way in which the Communists make use of the American Negro problem as grist for their propaganda mill . We must realize , he said , that two-thirds of the world is colored , and , in order to win them , we must set a proper example of good race relations . This clean-up-our-own-backyard-first explanation is the most current and popular one given by civil rights defenders and integrationists . It is promulgated by the ...

Letters To The Editor To The Editor : I read with some amazement the front page editorial in the HOYA for March 17 , concerning the Alumni Annual Giving Fund . I am afraid some confusion could easily result in the minds of other readers of the article . In the first place , the Fund upon which you were reporting is not the Georgetown University FundRaising Drive , but is properly referred to as the Alumni Annual Giving Fund , to save it from being confused with the work of the Georgetown Development Office , which is seeking funds in capital amounts for construction . The figures quoted are not for the 1960 Fund , which has hardly opened , but represent the results of the 1959 Fund , which ended at the end of the calendar year . In listing the areas in which the University plans to use the money which we brought in 1959 , you indicate that $ 12 , 000 is to be used for publicity . That is not true , but the sum will be used for publication of worthwhile , scholarly contributions of t...

Dali Dispute To The Editor : In your March 17 edition the author of Arts and Letters reveals an interesting theory of art . Through his elaborate paraphrase of a Time article ( Feb . 15 , 60 ) on Salvador Dalis Christopher Columbus Discovers America I seem to catch an extraordinary assumption , on his part , about the nature of this elusive quality . I must first quote the author . Though the sentences quoted are taken out of context , I do not think their sense is changed . Recalling that Dali referred to Columbus as a metaphysical dream , the author wrote : Not being much of a metaphysician , and still less of a psycho-analyst , this writer wouldnt dare hazard an opinion on the painting , except that Dali himself claims that his work has something to do with art . The author then concluded that this mode of expression would allow him to offer some sort of value-judgment . As a metaphysician or psycho-analyst ( and , I might add , as a painter , craftsman , or theologian ) , he cou...

Campion Enters Philoclernic Disbarred Through Judge Ruling [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 24 March 1960

Campion Enters Philoclernic Disbarred Through Judge Ruling by Mike Raoul-Duval At 7 : 30 last Friday morning , Philodemic debaters Robert S . Bennett and Fred J . Nichols were notified by telephone that they were not to represent Georgetown in the Regional Tournament which was to begin that day . Nichols and Bennett had been preparing- for this particular tournament for over a month . This action also deprived the Regional Tourna ¬ ment of a Philodemic team for the first time in many years . They were further informed that the Campion Society of the Foreign Service and Business Schools would send a team to replace the ousted Philodemic team . This decision was reached after a rather complicated series of events . About five weeks ago , Father D . Gilbert Sweeney , S . J ., Moderator of the Philodemic , received a preliminary application form for the Regionals . It required that he list the two men who would represent the Society , their records , and a judge of faculty status . Benn...

by Denms Duffy Our Man In Havana The Magic Lantern Carol Reed s production of Our Man In Havana is a curiously indeed irritatingly , unsuccessful bit of film-making . Who wouldn _1 be mad at watching Alec Guiness , Burl Ives , Noel Coward , and Ernie Kovaes muddling through a film which cannot make up its mind whethei to be comic with serious overtonesor serious with comic overtones i The movie fails to move as it should ; the horror behind the _comedj fails to make itself felt , and thus much of the latent humor is enervated by the absence of any deep conviction over the inhumanity of the proceedings . After all , are not a clown s antics rendered more desperate , more gripping , more nervously riotous by flinging a pie at a lion rather than a lion-tamer ? This general failure of all connected with the film , to convey any conviction concerning their roles is especially marked in Kovaes throwing away of those wonderful lines about the torturable class of Graham Greene s novel and s...

Dark Maneuers in SC Spawn Strange Brood [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 24 March 1960

Dark Maneuers in SC Spawn Strange Brood by Mark Baldwin The Student Council passed a resolution at 1 a . m . last Thursday , and the walls are still shaking . Resolution 22 provides for a Student Council Social Activities Committee whose duty it is to advise on and consent to University social functions . This resolution is important for one reason only : its function as an advisory group for College-wide social events . Two of last year s classes lost a total of about $ 450 . 00 on a big weekend . This committee should be a big help towards more enjoyable and profitable weekends next year , President of the Yard George Giard said . The amendment to the by-laws states that the committee suggest feasible methods of contracting entertainment personnel , and shall . . . suggest additions or corrections to proposed budgets when necessary . But if any college-wide social function decides to come to the committee—and no one is obliged to—the committee has the power to veto any single expe...
