Several prominent business men , who are not politicians , were also invited to be present . Many notable speeches were made , but the one which seemed to attract the most attention was a talk by James J . Hill -of the Great Northern Railway . His subject was The National Wealth of the Land and Its Conservation . He compared the United States to a corporation with the federal and state governors as directors and 87 , 000 , 000 people as stock holders . He mentioned the mineral product of . the ground as constantly diminishing and he made the statement that up to present time the farmers have been ruining the soil so that the probability of a lesser yield stares us in the face .
