USEFUL Draining Blue Clay. There are t.vo gooil ways of doing this If the subsoil is uniformly blue clay, and the area to bo drained large, the most economical way of draining it i3 by the use cf a mold-ditcher, such as have been extensively used in Ohio and Illinois. Tlic Famine in Tersla. Rev. J. II. Shedd thus writes to one of our religious papers about the aw fur famine now raging in Persia: The famine is not only one of ce reals, but of forage as well. The prophet of old exclaims, "Alas! for the day! how do the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are porplexed be cause they have no pasture; yea the flocks of Bheep are made desolate." Those paatorial tribes have been fighting for two years past with the drought, and as the pastures haTe dried up;jLheir stock has perished. The most melancholy result is the death ot tht r uimals in such a land 83 Persia. There are no iiver3, no railways, no canals, no road3 for wheeled vehicles, so when the ani mals die there ia no mens for trans portation except on tha backs of men. In thi3 f-ict is one of the agra vations of the present larnine. A proper system of roads, and two or three railways, with some sys tematic provision fcr such a crisis, would make a famine like the pres ent one impossible. But when a...
