"No event since the assassination of the lamented Lincoln, the martyr President, has po startled the country or the world at. large as did the announcement last Saturday of the attempted assassination of President Garfield. Everywhere, everybody was horifled and astounded. The assassination of the Czar of Russia, it is true, startled the world, but Nihil ism had been rampant and threatening, so that that atrocity was not wholly un locked for, and for that deed there was at least imaginary wrongs, if not real, of an oppressed people as a motive, but for the horrible deed of Saturday it is hard to conceive of any motive, and the only charitable construction that can be placed upon the act is that it was per petrated by a man devoid of reason, and yet from the man's actions and conver sation at the time, and since the perpe tration of the dastardy deed, this can be hardly...
