We paid a visit to the room of the Historical Society, on Thursday last, for the purpose of seeing this work, which has justly excited much admiration among those who claim to be connoisseurs. To this honorable appellation we make no claim whatever, being ignorant even of the terms ofart. The sculptor doubtless worked at it con amore, as it was, perhaps, his ideal of perfect beauty.— T.ie only fault we could find with it was, that it did not, in our opinion, bsar sufficient marks of being the representation whieh it is de signed to be, there being no r...

THE DAILY DISPATCH. Horkiblk Traocdt.—A Georgia paper published the subjoined account of a tragedy said to have been perpetrated in Gilmer county, in that Slate, on the 10th of November. It iii almost too horrible for belief, yet it appears to be authentic. Well may ii ba said that woman, when roused, has the spirit of an unchained tiger: On the morning mentioned, a woman named Presley, living within a few miles of Elijah, informed her neighbois that a strange man had stopped at the house the day before, and tarried through that (Tuesday) night, durine which he had killed her husband. On repairing to the house, her husband was found in bed, insensible, with an axe still sticking in his cleft skull, anJ his brains oozing out. He breathed •n until Wednesday evening, when death came to his relief. A daughter of the victim disabused the public mind, by denying that any •trange man had been on the premises, as stated by her mother, upon whom, of course, suspicion then fell, and shs was a...
