Playing at the for- ward position for the Bellaire High School Cardinals, Grace averaged 13 points per game, being one of the bright lights in a dismal basketball season for the Cardinals, 2-10 in district play. Grace admits a preference for offense, but says she'll be working on defense in preparation for her senior year. She hopes to go to the University of Texas, hopefully on an athletic scholarship—Texas A & M and the University of Hou- ston have already expressed interest in her. Other sports she has been involved in at Bellaire include cross country and track. April 1-15, 1982 r£j ^ Southwest Chinese Journal , Page 7 PSYCHOLOGY Byweiningc.chang,ph.o. Self Concept and Self Assessment 4- Psychologist The late Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung wrote volumes on people who are encased in roles that are not compatible with their nature. In his ModeAn Man'-i SexiAck {)0^i Jung has spelled out the mysterious but com- pelling suffering which afflicts many people. One might ask, what is self? The definition of the term "self" varies from one theorist to another, but these definitions all surround the collection of actions, aptitudes, thoughts, emotions and motivations of a person. Corresponding to "self" is another term called "self-concept"—that is, how one sees this "self" of his. This self-concept, though illusive, has been the cen- ter of attention for many modern psychologists since Carl Jung. It is suggested to be the most important factor that contributes to the success or failure, happiness or despair, of the individual. It is the referen...

Prof. Sung, being one of the first to document the history and level of achievement of Chinese Americans in her books and articles, has been both acclaimed and criticized for her findings. During the conference, Prof. Sung was approached by sever- al conference members who told her of their admiration for her groundbreaking efforts in Chinese American studies. Presently the head of the Dept. of Asian Studies of the City College of New York, Prof. Sung graciously spoke to members of the local Chinese press. Page 10 v5j Southwest Chinese Journal April 1-15, 1982 GE's Answer Center In our technological world of the 80's, where an Apple is a computer and "800" means a toll-free phone call, a person may feel similarly redefined—into a faceless number, without identity amid countless other num- bers which seem to define our existence—social se- curity numbers, driver's license numbers, student ID numbers. Undeniably, some of these numbers have a de- personalizing effect, yet in a massive society like ours, the pairing of num- bers with real people is an inevitable consequence of modernization which, after all, tries to make life a little easier to bear. There is one company— General Electric—which has recently introduced to Hou- ston a new number—800-626- 2000—which may actually succeed in making life a little easier to bear for its many consumers. General Electric, maker of over 100 different consumer product lines, has developed what it calls The Answer Center to provide a 24-hour, every-...

Retinitis pigmentosa is considered a hopeless case. Recently, a great deal of newspaper coverage was given to a boy who flew to Russia with his mother to effect a cure. Upon returning to the states, it was disclosed that nothing of consequence took place to promote a recovery. The same disease, retinitis pigmentosa, is now being treated in Houston by Dr. Joe Kang who thus far has pro- duced splendid results in a Vietnamese patient. Dr. Kang is optimistic in his treatment and use of acupuncture. His patient had the sixth treatment on February 23. Treatments are given every other day. After ten treatments, the patient will go back to his American doctor to check his eyes. After 70 treatments, predicts Dr. Kang, the patient will...

Page 12 & \fj 'i t 4* Southwest Chinese Journal April 1-15, 1982 Reflections: On the Chinese Film Industry by William Der Bing The world's most prolific producers of movies are not located in Hollywood. That title belongs to a group lo- cated in Hong Kong, and some of the trash being turned out at an alarming rate from that direction have found a mar- ket right here in Houston and are being shown on the local TV Metromedia station and certainly elsewhere in the country. Because we Chinese Americans have enjoyed positive steps in the area of equal employment opportunity, due to our forefathers' endurance and strength, these movies are in one fell swoop depicting Chinese as being very violent and capable of anything for material gain. Gone are the ethics. Gone is the honesty. Gone is the loyalty. Gone is the family structure, if one is to believe these movies which pander to the greed of businesses all over the world. Violence has replaced gentleness. Greed and cor- ruption has re...
