Continued from Previous Page onion powder, but who knows? — has a sooth- ing, creative spark that can't be beat. It comes tossed with bacon and boiled egg, both of which combine nicely in texture and flavor. Sandwiches dominate the menu — we enjoyed the burger ($5.95), but some of the spe- cialties light the way to heartier eating. The rib- eye ($15.95) came slightly overcooked, but it was juicy and flavored with a marinade that called to mind a Worcestershire sauce rub. Both came with fries that are unlike anything we'd ever tried. You expect home fries to be thick-cut, but these gigantic slices of potato were huge (even so, they were cooked through, not mealy and cold on the inside). The crispy coating was appealing, too. A side of steamed vegetables — a lovely rainbow of colors on the plate — seemed especially fresh. For dessert, try the house-made chocolate cake, which infuses cinnamon for an unexpected savory bit. The only downside to Loretta's abiding friend- liness comes in s...

style stage eh bin cross-dresser 'Wife' delves into complexity of character: 'Rocky' pulls some strings By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer Charlotte von Mahlsdorf was a true character. Born Lothar Berfelde in Wiemar Germany, Charlotte defied convention by being a gay cross-dress- er, while living under two regimes not known for their tolerance of the dis- possessed: the Nazis and the Communists. But Charlotte soldiered on, rescuing knickknacks from destruction and establishing a museum in her basement, where she could preserve the antique phonographs, clocks and other furnish- ings that captured her attention. When the Berlin Wall finally fell, she became a cult hero, both for her conservation and as a queer icon of endurance in the face of adversity. But was she all that admirable? The seemingly benevolent van Mahlsdorf, drably clad in a black sack dress and strand of pearls, may have done unspeakable things to sur- vive. But if that's what it took to stay alive, how can we judge h...

I have known her since elementary school. We shared the same friends and hung out constantly. How that we're not talking, our mutual friends have stopped calling me. They were the only social group I had, and now I have no friends. I feel lonely like I've lost everything. Plus, I'm shy. Most likely I now will stay home on weekends and do nothing. What should I do? — JR., 24years old Dear J.R., Have you asked your friend why she stopped talking to you? Was it due to a miscommunica- tion? It could be she thinks you don't want to hang out anymore. Long-term friendships are precious. It's worth the risk to ask what's going on. Fixing friends...

Just ask William Hung. For gay songwriter Levi Kreis, a high-profile boost launched him from well- regarded obscurity to the national spotlight. Last year, on the heels of an appearance on the NBC reality show "The Apprentice," the Los Angeles via Nashville songwriter released his debut album, "One of the Ones." The exposure helped Kreis' collection of heartbroken piano ballads find an audience it never would have on its own. If Kreis was hoping to parlay his reality-TV fame to showcase his songwrit...

this week's best bets stage Classical Acting Company opens 'No Exit' "Hell is other people," Jean-Paul Sartre wickedly wrote in "No Exit." The existentialist's most famous play spends 90 minutes proving that point. Three characters are locked in a windowless drawing room, expect- ing to be tortured, but soon find that their punishment is spending time with each other, probing the sins and weaknesses that have led them to this point. The characters bear striking similarities to Sartre himself, his bisexual mistress Simone de Beauvoir and de Beauvoir's lesbian lover. Tina Parker, usually a fixture at Kitchen Dog, joins Classical Acting Company founders Emily and Matthew Gray in this production.
