A TRIP FROM WHITTLESEA TO WALLABY CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 2 November 1883

A TRIP FROM WHITTLESEA TO WALLABY CREEK. By REUBEN AND LARRIKAN.   Leaving Whittlesea one morning about 8.30, after having partaken of a good breakfast, we set off on a pair of good horses for Wallaby Creek. Hav- ing crossed the Plenty River, which is greatly increased by the Wallaby Creek flowing into it, we turned along the new works from Jack's Creek to Whittlesea. The contractors are Messrs Falkingham and Anderson, the con- tract being let for £64,000. We came across a number of pitchers which are being carted on the tramway along the line of works, and are rapidly set by a gang of pitcher-setters. As we went a little further on we noticed a steep in- cline, where the pressure of water is too great for an open channel, it will therefore be carried down in large iron pipes (the largest in the colony). The aqueduct is very circuitous on account of its having to go around the hills in order to get the proper level. We soon reached Jack's Creek, which is a very nice lit...

THE ORIGIN OF THOUGHT. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 9 November 1883

THE ORIGIN E, F THOUGHT. An able lecture orn this subject was delivered hih thet-har l of the Young Men's Chriatist Aisocistion,Melbourne, recently,.. byithe Rev. Dr. S. M. Caeryn, the. following brief report of which (taken from the drgus) is well worth perusitig : Dr. Oaffyn pointed out that the old and popular belieithat it was imposmi ble to understand the origin of thought had been overcome by science, and that before long men who knew so much about other matters would at last know themselves... The brain was composed of a number of little nerve cells, in which was stored all the knowledge we possessed, and the means by which particular knowledge was secreted was by the pressure of blood upon a par ticular cell. Whenever a person learned some new fact it was conveyed along a nerve to one of these cells, and the shorter the period that elapsed between frst soquiring the knqwledge and being obl 9 edjo, s1i4Jt. a second time the easier it was to rmember it. HETERODOX PAPERS. (CONTRIBUTED.) [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 9 November 1883

HETERODOX PAPERS, (coTraIBUTEo.) (I see by the papers that the Minister of Educeation has issued a circular to all the head-teachers of State schools in structing them to close the usual work. ing of the school at half-past three on one or two afternoons per week .sap pointed by the local boards of advice, and immediately on doing sotoannounce to the children that all those whose parents do not object may stay for religious instruction. And now it r e. mains to be seen what advantage will be taken of the conoession by those ministers, pastors, and others who have been agitating the matter. In my own opinion-very little. I know ther are a few. thorough-hearted, whole-souled, energetic christians who will make the very best use of it, as they have hitherto done of all and every opportunity, but I very much doubt if-especially in the country districts-any change will be made.
